Great ride from Alaphilippe.

You have to wonder what the IT,NL,BE teams were thinking letting him go though. WvA,MVDP and Colbrelli all marked themselves out of the chase

Alaphilippe was crazy strong, but we were wondering about the same when he took off and there was no organization in the chase. G2 held the gap at 12-15s for a while, but lacked the unity and g3 clearly never tried to bridge until Pidcock managed to take out 20s from g2 and alaphilippe in less than 2km. That proves that the pace was not incredibly high. Colbrelli looked very strong up until then.

But I guess that's what happens in very long races without radios. Kudos to alaphilipp, he rode clever and is a deserved (two time) world champion.

Many hate the Amstrong and will be cynical but he took some time to help Ullrich. Great to see old rivals just enjoy the company of each other and be aware of what both have been through. To go from celebrated champion to hated outcast.

Predicitions anyone? Pidcock, Stybar and Senechal all looked strong to me.

My fear for Pidcock is that he's literally too light for cobbles. He's going to be bounced around and lose forward momentum / traction compared to heavier riders. Kinda like how he does relatively worse in sandy CX races.

I don't think so. He's a "natural" over any kind of uneven terrain, he showed it at the Olympics, rode the course with such ease and facility, over bumpy rocks, etc. IMO he spends less energy than his opponents, in CX and XC he usually moves ahead in the later portion of races.

Rock gardens are more reliant on technical skills / choosing the right lines. Cobbled sectors are mostly about the power you can get out of your tires over the pavement.
