Disc front hub on non-disc frame
Moderator: robbosmans
Inspired by this post I was considering building a front wheel with a hub dynamo for winter training. At the moment I'm riding with rim brakes. But since no one knows what the future holds, it's not ruled out that I will ride with discs in the future. So on order to be prepared for that, my question is: Would cause any problems to build a front wheel with a disc hub on a rimbrake rim and ride it with rim brakes for now. The spacing is the same and both are with QR's. And if I want to ride it with disc brake in the future, I'm just gonna mount a disc on the wheel/hub and ride it like that. Any thoughts?
I'm aware that thru axle probably will be the standard in the future. But let's not focus on that for now.

No issue at all, unless you consider a slightly dished front wheel, slightly more weight, and, eventually, using a rim brake rim on a disc brake wheel in the future an issue. Seems like a reasonable idea to me if you plan to keep this wheel for a while.

I think your last paragraph is the hitch. There will be no point in doing this* because if you do eventually want to move the wheel to a disc frameset the axle won't match up. I mean, right now there's still some QR/disc forks but in 2 years?
*The only reason you should bother is if you find a dynamo hub with swappable end caps so it can be switched to thru-axle later. This is common on MTB hubs but I doubt a dynamo hub with swappable end caps exists.

I do this. I run a QR disc dynamo hub on a non disc frame.
If you want to future proof, the SP PD8X comes with adaptors to run a 15QR in a 9mm QR frame.

Looks correct to me. I'd go for 292 and 294, probably with Sapir DLights.

Nice ooo. Didn't know 28h open pro's were available.
I've just finished a wheelset with Shimano 105 hubs and Mavic A119 rims 32h/32h. I'd like the front wheel with dynamo to match that wheelset with the same rim. So if you find the Mavic A119 rim in 28h, I would be really interested.
