what use/what size cassette ?
Also depends a lot on where you race and the terrain. I race in the Intermountain West and there are a lot of hills on the cross courses, so I use 44/36 chain with a 13-26 cassette. If I lived somewhere flat with fast courses I would run 46/38 with 12-25 cassette, or even a 48/38 if the courses were really fast.
There's as many opinions of 'what's good for me' as there are people giving the advice.
Me? 34/44 'cause I like to spin. I have a 46t big ring on now and its a hair big. This is especially noticeable trying to maintain speed on the east coast grass race courses.
Chainrings are fairly inexpensive. Try a few different ones and see.
If you're JRA on gravel roads, 36/50 or 34/50 are a good bet. Once cross season's over, I'll go back to the 34/50 setup and ride my Full Tilt Boogie like a road bike.
