yes he used speedplays last year. He likes to remove all of the plastic from the body also. I talked with a Cervelo Rep and stated speed play were not impressed by the pedals being modified. I will post a picture of me on the bike later today.

Does anybody know what bar tape is on this bike?

Surely you should be more interested in what bar tape he used last year when he won? This bar tape is just under 4 minutes slower than Boonen's bar tape, over 260km.

A 73 deg head tube w/ a 50mm rake makes for extremely quick handling -- not what I'd expect for Paris-Roubaix.

It's about 50mm of trail... I would think you would want a little better, but then again, it's probably more to get clearance for mud and 25-27mm tubs than for handling reasons.


I rode a track bike all winter for several winters as a messenger, so I guess it's not so different! Much easier to make handling input over those flat, meter wide paths than switchbacks at 40-50mph.

And to muddy the waters further, from Cervelo's website:

Strong and ideal for bad conditions:
- Victory in the world's toughest race, Paris-Roubaix
- Lightest frame ridden by the heaviest rider in that race
- Tire clearance for 27mm special Vittoria tires

So, actually, I don't know. I regularly ride with a guy who has an R3, I'll check out the clearance next time I see him. I may be wrong, it may be stock, although O'Grady's bike was modified.

I think you missed the point. Journey wasn't claiming that he could win P-R by riding an R3. His observation was that surviving (and winning) P-R was a testament to the R3's durability under harsh conditions.

The P-R R3s are not the same as the ones sold to mortals. They are actually closer to the RSs. Rear Dropout is slightly wider and 1cm longer.
