I have been using Powerbar green apple caffein added gels on marathon&enduro races during this season and also on last year. Normally i´ll take first gel after 1-1½ hour from start and after that one gel per every 45 minutes. With gel I always try to drink about 2 dl of water, not sports drink.
For me this method seems to work nicely. I dont drink coffee or use caffein other ways...

Caffeines effect in promoting endurance only works on those that are not addicted to the stuff. The diuretic aspect however is greatly diminished with that same addiction for most people. The suger in the gel will negate any fat burning and lower the immune system for approx 2 hours. Gels are best for racing and not for daily training in regards to overall health. BTW Starbucks is on my traing route
