Paul Neo Retro Brakes

Hey guys anyone have any experience with these or any of Paul's other cross brakes? I am considering these for a bike for this season.

Great brakes.

Ability to toe-in is a real bonus versus a lot of high end brakes.

I would suggest going for the black version as the bare alloy can corrode.

I have never experienced issues with their width, although Paul's mention it in their blurb.

Oh, and they really aren't the pain in the arse to set up that some reviewers would have you believe. Actually very simple with one pair of hands.

What can Paul's do that Avid Ultimates can't? Lighter? Cheaper?

They probably function in much the same way, but the decision is as much about buying from a small boutique brand vs a giant corporation, and the more handmade look and feel of Paul's vs the slicker finishing of Avid. For me, I would rather support the smaller manufacturer who answers their emails when you have a problem, and I prefer the old school look of Paul's. Cantilevers are by nature a fairly old school solution to stopping a bike, so for me Paul's just feel right. Nothing against the Avids, as I am sure they are great brakes. Just a personal choice thing based on more than functionality, weight and price.

I have the avids and can tell you it is a pain to have to have every tiny sized allen key in the world to work on them. Still love the brakes but there you go on the +1 for Paul.

Another vote for the Paul's! I have them on both cross bikes. Have used Froglegs and Tektro, nothing compares to Paul's. I use regular road shoes/pads as well. Works like a charm!

One more question, should I mix it up with a neo retro in the front and a canti touring in the rear or stick with neo retro all around, also I will be using it for cross racing.

Count me in on the paul's. great brakes, both cx racing bikes have them and my winter road bike. I use the pro cross setup with the Neo in the front and the touring in the back.

I use neo retro both ends. I have large calves and feet and never clip them.

Much more powerful, and better looking I think.

Been using them for three years and each year I'm tempted by the "hot new brakes" by TRP or Avid. Then, I use the Pauls and recall how easy it is to set them up and I count myself lucky to have them.

Within 8-10 grams of the Avid Ultimates if weight is an issue.
