On the SL7 with Rapide wheels, what is the absolute largest slick tire that could be fitted before cutting it close? If I moved to a slightly wider wheel that doesn't balloon the tire could it be pushed even more?

P.S. not wishing to take the bike on gravel or cross. Just curious how much tire can absolutely be fitted without imperiling the frame.

I've been running a bit shallower wheels on the SL7 lately, and nabbed a few hilly KOM's with it. Typcially I'd reach for the Aethos on hilly rides, but this does the trick, especially at the higher speeds. The 30mm(32mm measured) tires surely add a little weight, but man they feel nice. I know the SL8 would meet them both in the middle, but I'm quite happy with this thing still, just over a year on...

Hi there, noticed you're running the farsports wheels with a 30mm tyre.

Can I ask what is the internal and external width of your rim, and how wide are the tyres measuring?

I am also using the farsports hypers, and considering to use 30mm gp5000 str tyres but am afraid there is no room for clearance

@impotentloki, Wheels shown there are 25mm internal width, with hooks, and tires are 30mm GP5000's... Measure out at just a tad over 32mm and plenty of clearance all around, even for wet weather and dirty roads. 4+ mm at the tightest spots.

Will get the 30mm GP5K STR and give it a try, coming from NorCal Cycling's video it seems like a 30mm is equally fast, if not even faster, than the 28mm tyres.

You can put 33mm CX tyre on 19mm rim with minimal clearance. So slick will fit just fine.

NorCals video is nice, but he used the same wheels for all 3 tires, but I think he didn't specify what's the inner and outer rim width.
I suspect his rims were wider than 30mm outer, so both 28 and 30mm tires benefited from the aerodynamics.
for 30mm external, to me it sounds more like you'd want to run 28mm tires.
but as long as you are not a pro racer, I doubt you'll feel a difference in speed anyway

They used the Roval Rapide CLX. So inner 21, outer 35. The huge outer diameter aside the Rapides where developed for 26mm tires and the 105% rule in mind. However I guess the test would not lean so much towards wider tires if the front wheel would have been only 28mm wide.

Yeah spot on, I am not a pro racer and I cycle 4-5 times a week, I value comfort and longevity of my body most.

It's nice to know that running wider tyres which helps with dampening road vibrations will not lose you speed, which is ultimately my intention to go 30mm.

Managed to install the new 30mm tyres and will give it a go in the next few days

It is also important to note that Norcal's test didn't involve any climbing and it was pretty much a steady state course like a TT from what I saw... that minimizes the weight effect that wider tires have. Additionally, it was just 1 run with each set up for each of the two riders... statistically that isn't really enough to determine concrete answers. It is really anecdotal at best. He says that in the video... he's not doing a science experiment or trying to submit it to journals, he's just making entertainment with a little information. It is interesting, but not by any means a definitive solution.

Installed on the new 30mm gp5k str tyres, measured to be at just a little above 32mm, pretty similar to Upcountry's.

In terms of the riding feel, speed feels the same, holding 40-45kmh feels like it requries similar effort, kept it at 60psi and it is really comfy I must say.
