Hello all,
I recently switched to 11 speed and I use a 11-28 cassette. I was planning to buy a 12-25 cassette and swap the 11 and 18 between each other. However, when I looked at the ratios, it really gave a weird progression up the cassette. A 16T cog is what I need, and I actually have a few of them, albeit from 10 speed cassettes. The configs I'm after are 11-25 and 12-28 with both having 16T in them.

Firstly, will there be any problems from swapping cogs from different cassettes?
And secondly, will a 10sp cog work inside a 11sp cassette? If not, where can I source a loose 16T cog?

Thanks,

Never tried it but I'd be surprised if there is much of a problem using a 16 sprocket from a 10spd cassette in an 11 spd cassette......

Consider buying the cheapest 11S group cassette you can and using the 16 tooth sprocket from that

I've done that before to get a specific sprocket (below the Ti ones weight is a non-issue)

Download the technical documents of the cassette,e.g. the "explosive view" from Shimano. Then compare the model number of the cogs
Normally the cogs should have the same number and thus they are exchangable.

Simply measure the thickness and take note of the tooth placement within the cluster. There will be a noticeable ramp up the cassette.

rosebikes has a spare 16t cog for Shimano.

A 10sp cog should be the same width as an 11sp cog as the chains have the same roller width- 11sp chains are narrowed in the side plates.

If you put two cogs together that were not made for each other shifting will be slightly degraded. Adding say a 16t between 15t and 17t will have better shifting than removing a 16t from between 15t and 17t. But in my experience usually removing cogs, the shifting is usually tolerable. (that's on shimano cassettes, sram 10sp).

Thanks for the replies.
What eric said makes perfect sense to me, the inner width is the same between 10-11 sp chains, why should the cog thicknesses be different?
I've noticed in Shimano's exploded view that the 18 and 19T in the 12-25 cassette are fixed together so I can't remove one without the other. So 12-25 cassette, in DA, Ultegra and 105, is not convertible to a 11-25, at least without removing 17T and having a huge jump there. If I buy a 11-25, then I will have to source a 12T lockring and a loose 16T cog to convert the 11-28 into a 12-28, I have both in 10sp. Will have to try if that works. If not, I'll have to buy an extra 105 12-25, which has both.

rasmussloth, thanks for the link, but Rosebikes charges 28€ for postage, I can buy a new cassette for that money.

Out of curiosity. What is the obsession many have with the mythical 16t cog?

It's kind of in that "cruising" pacelining range where close ratios are nice to have so you can adjust accordingly. Fine tuning your cadence if you will.

I was always shifting back and forth between 15 and 17T in the 11-25 cassette and I was happily hamstering along at 100 rpm in the 16T, with the 12-27 cassette. Both were 10sp.

So it's in the sweet spot for me, 100 rpm with the 53/16 is around 42-43 kph, where I'm quite comfortable at.

I have failed.
I put together a 12-28 cassette with the aforementioned 16T cog, but the problem was that the 12T on the cassette did not have enough purchase on the freehub, it was too far out. Also it didn't have any grooves for the lockring to hold onto, and the lockring could loosen.

Anyways, now I can power down 70 kph descents! Great!

Thicknesses of 10s and 11s cog are identical exactly.
I pull the 16T out of my 11 / 25 or 12 / 28 CS-9000 cassette, then add a CS-4600 30T cog with a 11s spacer to the lower end.
I need the 30T for climbing to top of WuLing, Taiwan.

I don't have photo of my "12 / 30", but it work flawless with my DA 52 / 34 combe in Wuling Cup, Aug this year.

How did you remove the 30T from the cluster?

If its CS-4600 it's either riveted or screwed together, 30 seconds is all it takes to pop it off.

May give issues with gouging of the freehub body if you are using an aluminium one.
