sub 1400g alloy for everyday use

it's been a while since i've checked out this thread and OMG.. so many threads on different options.

i've been riding on my farsport CF clinchers for over 1.5yrs.. and want to get an alloy set for everyday use. would like it to be sub 1400gr or lighter if possible, but not feeling like mush when i climb.

anything you guys can recommend me? i'm 150lbs.. so 20/24 spoke or maybe even 16/20 might work for me.

Probably a set with that new Pacenti SL-23. They're like 425 grams each. With a moderately light hubset and 1.5mm spokes, 1350g will be easy to attain.

In practice, the new Pacentis are around 450-465g, which kind of precludes them from getting that light.

I bought 2 v2 pacenti sl23 recently, the pair weighed 833g, the front 24 hole was only 406g, the rear with 28 holes should have been lighter, but actually weighed 427g.

They seem quite inconsistent. 24g or 5% heavier with 4 extra holes!

Light hubs and either

Ryde Puls Sprint,
Kinlin XR19W or
Kinlin XR200

Will easily get you under 1400 g, even with 24/28 configuration, which I would recommend at your weight.

I have a XR19W wheelset with bikehubstore UL hubs 24/28 @1.350 grams. 8.000 km and still going without problems. But if I could build them differently, I would choose slightly heavier end more durable hubs.

The wheels I've been buiding for training the last four years are XR270 rims on BHS hubs, 20f/28r. They come in at about 1440g. Using the lightest BHS hubs, Laser spokes on the DS, and 24h on the rear would get that to about 1400g. The XR270 is unfashionably narrow these days but it works ok for me.
The XR270s are about 440g. Besides the Pacentis there are also some newer BHS rims that I'd check out.

Eric, could you elaborate on, what you find so special about the 270's?

It's not that I don't like them, it's just that IMHO there are so many other good rims out there.

I'd never seen a Pacenti SL23 of either version anywhere near 460g, so I just pulled 8 off the shelf and weighed them - lightest was 406, heaviest was 422. Totally consistent with what we've seen throughout with them.

I built a set of BHS C31W rims, BHS SLF71W and SL210 hubs with Sapim force spokes and brass nipples. Build came in at 1556 g in a 24/28 configuration. Lasers or cxrays with alloy nipples would drop that down a bit.

So far no issues other than a spoke with the Garmin magnet attached going slack on a long ride on chip seal. The magnet was tapping the cadence sensor a bit at that time and I have since adjusted it.

Brandon mentioned other builders have been using 20/24 builds for riders at my weight with no issues. I was going to use the offset rim on the rear but was shipped a standard and they were out of stock on them when I questioned the discrepancy. Decided to keep the existing and build it out.

I'm 5' 10" and 210 lbs, wheels are on a 2013 Giant TCR SL.

I think the appeal of the kinlin rims are that they're as light as pacenti but don't cost $110 per rim. Not anywhere near as trendy though.

Just over 10 thou' kms on my set. One recent rear spoke break.
Used as everyday wheel at 60kg.

Have been very happy with them.

I built some 2015 Pacenti Sl23 20:24 with 16:8 BHS hubs.
With light tyres (Conti GPTT 23mm) and latex tubes the ride is better than anything I've ever tried. They are stiff enough and comfortable, the finish is good and you can run a range of tyre pressures. You can fit tyres by hand alone and the spoke bed looks thicker now.

^^ to the above, they may be $110 but that is better than some competitors (HED et al). My rims were 407g and 422g and to my mind there is nothing to touch them in terms of extrusion design. No doubt Kinlin have their place but credit where credit is due, Pacenti has a superb product.
