what is yr favourite speed cassette for xc race?

11-32, I never use a 34t and enjoy the 11 on the straights.
How many have removed their 22 from the front? I'm tempted.

I Like 11/32 also. With 44/32 up front!

Right now, I am just using standard set-up. 22/32/44, with 11-32 in the back... But I am tempted to take off the 22 up front, simply because I NEVER use it in a race. But it is very good for a pre-race warm-up to get a good spin.
11-32 seems to fit the bill nicely with 22/32/44 up front. Rarely use the 32 in the back though so thinking about going to DA 11-27 with DA rear derailleur when the trails dry up in the spring. This setup is quite a bit lighter and seems to work for more than a few people.
Well, I live in the black forest and so I need the small 22 chain ring; I use on my XC-hardtail 48-32-22 and a custommade DA 11-27 cassette, XT rear d. Works fine.
On my "enduro"-bike I have 44-32-22 and DA 11-27 with XTR short cage rd.

Short cage is for 32 teeth max
Long cage is for 34 max
Ofcourse a XT mech could work with an 11/27 DA but i think it's better to use short cage!

Short cage road is for 27T max
trouble with short cages is they take up less chain when its bumpy so more chain slap. Dura ace works fine in mud, have used them on my CX bike for a couple of years

same as me. But i feel like going for 11t-21t. i feel like my 32t chainring is quite slack. It will be slow in the race coz of shifting take times abit.
Crashman like crashing, feel the rythem and ride.
32-11 Cassette for XC Racing is ideal. 27-11, maybe.
Like many others, a 2x9 setup is often used, but near my place, I have some very steep (25%+) Gradient that is too steep for 32t. Sometimes, its also good if you want to have an easy ride.
My idea would be, if you had to have a 3x9 setup, get a small chainring between 22 and 28. That way the roll-out is not ridiculously short.
The 2x9 setup is used by almost all pro's who dont have the new XTR Crankset. (Leuchs, Sauser, Frischknecht, Paulissen etc)
Is it possible to set up the new XTR, 2x9?

Hmmmm.. this got me thinking.....
What's lighter:
1: 3*9 ...... 22-32-44 up front with DA 11-27 rear (you must modify the cassette as it exists only as 12-27)
or
2: 2*9 ...... 29/30 -44 front with 11-32 rear
I guess the 3*9 setup will be lighter
But it's definitely more versatile if you have to ride uphill regularly. It's M()ountain)TB'ing offcourse

@danielgillet: I guess you just have to get the granny ring off the XTR cranks to make it a 2*9....

105 short cage rear D works on my 11t-30t 8 speed XTR . I use to race with it. No problem
