Anyone have an idea on Garmin's update cycles? I'm looking at updating my Edge 520 as it's getting old in the tooth and 830 looks to have everything I'd want...but wondering if a 840 or 830 Plus might be due soon

Garmin seem to be loosley moving to 2 yearly release cycles, which means we are a year away, at least, from an 830 replacement. Having said that Covid seems to have pushed most product launches/refreshes out so my bet would be it's longer.

I've an 830, great piece of kit. Only complaint I have is the accuracy of the sony chipset, it gains a chunk of battery life but loses GPS too quickly under tree cover, etc.

If you look at the time between older releases, then I would not expect 840 before 2022. Maybe plus version this year, but there has neever been a 800 series plus version.

510 - 2013 Q1
520 - 2015 Q3
520P - 2018 Q2
530 - 2019 Q2

810 - 2013 Q1
820 - 2016 Q3
830 - 2019 Q2

1000 - 2014 Q2
1030 - 2017 Q3
1030P - 2020 Q4

I had 520 before 530, and 530 has everything I wanted 520 to have. If you are ok with 520 buttons, then I would recommend 530, as it`s cheaper, and you avoid unwanted issues with touchscreen.

Was also hoping for an upgraded 830. Thinking instead of getting the Karoo 2 but Garmin has better supports for sensors/data.

Which sensor/data is missing from Karoo 2? I'm considering Karoo 2 or 1040 (if that would be named like it) as my 830 has weird road cycling navigation suggestion.

I really like my 830, I have never used the navigation portion. It does well if you load a ride, but try to program it on the road and it's down right frustrating. Of course, I blame myself since I have not read how to do that.

Can you explain a bit more about the navigation suggestions,... issues even?

As an IT guy who owned an 810 and 830 I can say that last one is near perfect. The battery also lasts insanely long and they filtered out all the minor quircks that the 810 still had.

Wouldn't wait for a newer model honestly. Only minor fault is the touchscreen doesnt work if it's really cold/damp, but that's only a few rides a year over here.

Made the same jump from 520 to 830...liking the training effect...

If you have an assioma or garmin vectors...also helps with cycling dynamics...

When trails / pathways are close to road, the navigation would be eager to jump between them. I have yet to bring it overseas so can't be sure if that happens in other area / road system. Can't remember my 1030 was doing the same.

I'm still waiting for Edge140 or such with improved battery life and minimum yet enough features. Edge530/830, while running incredibly smoothly and lasting so long, does come off as a bit too much for my usage. And it's a bit overpriced too.

130 was released in 2018 and plus in 2020, so I expect something new comes this year, although a global semiconductor famine may affect their releasing cycle.

You can save 100 EUR if you buy 530. Only difference is touch screen and on demand navigation to address.

Yeah I know. But am tempted with the touchscreen...from some of the previous comments I'm not so sure. I ride in most weather and sounds like I'd have problems in winter when it's often wet / cold

Touchscreen made set up look easier and I figured zoom in/out on maps must be way easier. Switch screen I've got set up via my STIs

It's easier for some actions like pin-pointing POI/destinations on map (sometimes), changing datafield on the go (rarely), accessing some functions via pull-down menu like auto-brightness/sensor re-scan (rarely)/missed notifications (sometimes). However, it's not easy to zoom in/out in motion on the small screen. 1030 would be better (but it has it's own issue the biggest being the blue halo). Not trying to deter your enthusism of 830, just letting you know my experience.
