My name is Paul, I'm a U23 cyclist from Chicago, I've grown up in a retail (running store) environment so tinkering with, creating, and modifying product has been something I've done my entire life. I've gone to school the last three years for visual arts, and have specialized in sculpture and product design. I've only posted a couple times before, mostly in the training thread. Happy to hear your criticisms and advice. Thanks!

After having the idea in my head for months, I finally got a new pair of shoes, which left me with a pretty knackered pair of bontrager shoes, and the possibility of this project. I ordered up a pair of Nike soccer boots, (Mercurials of course) and gathered the materials I needed. I separated the old shoe into the upper and the sole, and cleaned up the sole. After getting rid of all markings/logos and inconsistencies/chips in the clear coat, I recoated the soles with clear casting epoxy and let them dry.

Will have weights this afternoon.
The plan is to reduce the soccer shoe to just the booty, and then epoxy the carbon sole to it. Because the shoe has a gussetted tongue, I'm forced to set the cleats before i put the sole on the booty. Since I'm already being forced to make a semi permanent cleat position already, I was thinking about possibly doing something like this (Adam Hansen's shoes). So any tips about how and with what to do that would be appreciated. Image
I'm excited to see how this goes and I will be posting updates on every step.

Interested to see how this turns out, was debating something like this myself.

Separating the sole from the boot was my initial concern.

Here are the two soles. Left the toe caps on, removed the heel cap. Decided adjustability and replaceability was more valuable than 10 grams so I epoxied in the cleat screws.

Because the two lasts are close, but slightly different, I have to reshape the upper from the bottom in order to get a good match up between the upper and the sole. Now that I'm getting closer to putting the upper with the sole, I can see how I might end up needing to do a strip of carbon along the edge of where the two meet to clean it up visually.

Bond is made! I'm going to go over the edges of where the upper and the sole meet with a strip of carbon to clean it up and then I'll have weights.

Again, the ugliness should be covered up by the extra carbon I'm going to put around the edge. It should also help the bond between sole and upper.
