Strangest thing: at the end of my ride today My RD would not come down the cassette after the last climb. Checked it a home and the spring is gone!! I think there is a little piece still in there - I guess it broke. I've never seen or even heard of this before.

Is it possible to obtain and install just the spring?

Well, here is the SRAM Spare Parts Catalog http://cdn.sram.com/cdn/farfuture/x2NzQmGwGm40Rv3YjxAhcJfGrXrQRHz8fabeJ7xN8ek/mtime:1334764730/sites/default/files/techdocs/2012_sram_extdt_wheel_hub_spc_rev_c_0.pdf . P. 6 has the 2008-2012 Red RD. I don't see a spring shown, but take a looksie. As to the availability and cost of the listed parts?

A few LBS folks have advised me that a broken spring means a new derailleur. Totally non-serviceable as far as I can see.

For the want of a horse a kingdom was lost.

Mr.Gib,
Just curious which crank set you have used most combined with the mentioned Red RD?
Thanks.
