I cannot figure out what model these campy hubs are. I have never seen the grease port on any hub but Chorus and Record but I noticed that the front hub has plastic dust caps. Anyone? Thank you!

These are Record 9 speed. I'd have to do a little research on the exact year, but roughly 1998 or 1999. Just before the major redesign.

edit. just checked the parts catalog. these were only made in 1998.

prior had the exadrive splining and for 1999 the hubs got the complete redesign.

Those hubs, although fairly heavy, can last a long time. And cassettes up to today's 11-speed should be fine. They take a smaller lockring than the current one.

26x1 thread instead of the current 27x1 to be precise. :wink:

Those hube are what you'd find on pre-HPW era Shamals and Zondas. Steel and aluminium all over the place with big steel balls without separator cages and so on.
Big fat Sapim CX spokes too.

I think those are likely 8S era, not 9 speed though.

The first generation of 9 speed......The set I have I first ran as 9 spd, then 10, and now have 11 speed on it - no difficulties with spoke clearance.

Front hub uses sealed cartridge bearings - which was and still is quite out of the ordinary for Campy.

They use Ti axles but still as one poster noted, the rear is a bit heavy (compared to the next generation with aluminum axles)..

fdegrove has it right about the locknut - is a smaller diameter than current.

earlier hubs had the exa-drive splining. look again at the freehub. that is 9-speed Record 1998. you can see the difference by looking at the '97 spares catalog which clearly shows the earlier splining on the freehub. see p57 http://www.campagnolo.com/repository/documenti/en/spares97-B.pdf

They were nice hubs. As noted in a previous post, the front hub used cartridge bearings, BUT the inner seals were removed to facilitate lubing through the port in the center of the hub body.

I can't recall Campagnolo ever having cartridge bearings other than in bottom brackets? Maybe I'm wrong... :noidea:

All of their lower end wheels use cartridge bearings: Khamsin, Scirocco etc.

Lol...oh yeah silly me! :oops: I've only ever used campy hubs in custom built wheels.

I forgot about factory built wheels...
