Cycling event, which wheelset would you choose?

Discuss light weight issues concerning road bikes & parts.

I am about to do 140 km challenge cycling event next Sunday. I have 2 options of wheels. I have Zipp 404 tubular with Conti Gatorskin tubes which are lite weight wheels, great for climbings and quite good in terms of puncture protection vs. Mavic Cosmic SL mounted with Schwalbe Ultremo ZX with latkes tubes which I tend to believe are more tend to get puncture but on the other end you can always fix clinchers on the road. Also they are quite heavier than the Zipp. I guess the options are clear...! The question as well..! What would you do?

Changing a tubular on the road quick and easy. Or just sealant depending on the puncture size.

so to carry a spare tube?
Also which sealant is best to carry on the road or u mean to put it prior?

Tacx make a sealant which is pressurised so i dont there will be any need for a pump?
with the tacx sealant you normally put it in after you get the puncture

I would take some pitstop, it covers 90% of the punctures, with out the need to carry the slime int there ate all times
(yes pitstop/liquid latex has its problems)

If you rip a hole in the side it doesn't matter if it is a Tub or clincher, you will be looking for a second tyre, which you are more likely to carry if you have a tub :wink:

Tacx sealant and/or pitstop, are both of them just injected in the tyre through the presta valve in case of a puncture?

Veloflex carbon + pitstop gatorskin are crap use sprinter if you want protection and ad 25ml of stan sealent and that will be bulletproof

Thanks for answering the question that was never asked Emmanuel15, option "C" none of the above :roll:

Pitstop is an aerosol, so if you get a puncture you can clear the crap out then use it as a repair medium, you can also use it as a preventative. You don't need to remove the core and the gas inflates the tyre to about 80psi, not a lot but enough for Boonan at Roubaix. It only works for holes for 1mm, though

Stans (or other products like contiseal) is preventative, you remove the valve core and inject it, then fill with air. One of the issues is it will not go in some valves, BUT it will seal holes up to 2mm

I don't know the Tacx product

Most of them do, IIRC

I think only the Conti Giro doesn't in their range, but this is the sort of thing companies change over the years and forget to tell people about :roll: You could also get old stock, I got a Vittoria CX recently and it had the fixed type valve, with a removable core (generally vittoria do not have removable valve cores these days but the entire valve come off)
Best bet if you are buying - ask
