My first Aero bike build: Factor Ostro V2

On deep (60mm ish) wheels, the best you'll get is around 6.6kg without going crazy / compromising its performance.
My old one, if running Artech 6's would have been 6.52kg. Add a Darimo post and remove OSPW would have made it 6.45kg in a 56cm.
Running Enve RaceDays would take it down to a hypothetical 6.33kg.
Could also add a Darimo cockpit if you like playing Russian roulette, paired with a Gelu K3 saddle, 1x chainring (no FD), and have it knocking on the door of 5.9*kg.
Anything is possible with unlimited funds.

I'm not going to go down the all out weight weenie route with this one. Really just wheels and seatpost are on the horizon. Add in tpu tubes, that's another 90-100g savings. I can be at 6.8 in no time. For an aero do it all build with deep wheels, I'm good compromising weight. I would have gone with a SL8 sworks if I wanted a WW build, but the SL8 visually doesn't do anything for me.

You will end up liking the black Inc bars. Congrats on the build but get an E1 front derailleur as soon as you can. Before the seatpost or wheels even! Bike looks great.

The D1 FD has been giving me fits on the stand. Keeps throwing the chain over the big ring. Seems to really only happen on the 6th cog. Perfectly straight chain line, throws the chain. Sometimes it's smooth, completely random and I don't know why. I've heard several people complaining about D1 axs front and believe them. I never had any problems at all with my D1. I did have five years of adjusting a Red etap 11spd though and was relieved when 12 spd axs came out.nickf wrote:The D1 FD has been giving me fits on the stand. What I hated about D1 was the ridiculously slow downshift from big to small. Small to big was great and I never had throws either direction to contend with across 2 frames. When I upgraded again to E1 I COULD NOT BELIEVE how good the front derailleur was. I mean perfect in every way. This would be a mandatory upgrade imo.

I finally got in an actual ride on the Ostro, 117km and 1200m. We don't have well maintained roads but overall the bike was comfortable for this 3.5 hr ride. One thing I can notice vs my steel bike is the BB and front end/handlebar stiffness. It is VERY noticeable. My English is built with T47, 44mm HT, tapered fork, 44mm DT, and big Max chainstays, it's no WW frame at 1600g. I requested Rob to build me a stiff steel frame, and he delivered by using some of the largest tubes available. The MCFK bar and stem I am running on that bike is flexy. The Ostro handles the smaller bumps and rough road surfaces well but larger road irregularities are a bit more jarring. Not dangerously so, but I am now paying a bit more attention to what's coming. Most of the guy I ride with are on modern carbon bike and agreed that yes you will get bounced around a bit more. On the steeper climbs with higher power, the bike has zero flex that I can detect. This was a drastic difference that I really could feel, it was night and day. The bike really puts down the power. Having been off carbon road bike for 6+ years it was a completely different ride experience. I will never give up my steel bike but I know what bike I will be bringing to Tuesday night worlds.

Bang on. I completely understand the big love for old school steel road bikes and I love mine, but in terms of performance it's a night and day difference to modern road bikes. Both my Allez Sprint (Aluminium) and SL8 (Carbon) get the power down so much more than my old steel race bike when mashing out of the saddle.
