^For the finish line photos. Also used in Norwegian Cup races, but pinned to the side of the jersey.

Can you tell me why in last year's Tour d'Italie Espoirs they stuck a race number on the helmet?
Is that customary in European U23 races?

It's an italian thing, they often do that in Italy, in CX and MTB as well. Obviously where the numbers are is probably regulated more strictly for WorldTour, higher UCI level road races and CX/XC World Cups so you don't see that in bigger races.

Can someone explain the Vollering/Winder controversey?

In one photo Winder is winning. In the other it's Vollering. So Vollering got robbed here? If the camera was faulty, why wasn't a protest filed?

None of the usual news articles mention anything other than Vollering celebrating too early and losing it on the line.

More of a road junior/Mtb than U23.
Sometimes yes, but not a must.

It's not the public that gets to vote based on random photo shots, or what appears to be.
A trained commissaire on an official (photo finish) device is looking through images to determine official results/rankings. Winder's front tire passed the thin black line before Vollering. Simple.

Right... exactly.

The controversary comes from the fact that the TV camera was not positioned 100% correct so the angle made it appear as if Vollering won. She also celebrated and the live post race camera crew followered because they assumed that she knew she had won.... Winder said in her interview, "I had my head down, in my bike throw and when I picked my head up, she was celebrating, so I assumed she knew she had nicked it." I know those aren't the exact words, but that was the gist of it. Personally, I think they should both be proud....to win out of that break and they both pushed that sprint super long and neither gave up.

The broadcast camera was maybe 1 degree off-center, but that's not enough parallax to account for the difference. The main visual illusion was caused by Demi leaning her bike toward the camera and Ruth leaning her bike away. This meant that the leading edge of Demi's wheel/tire combo was a few cm closer to the camera than the section of the painted line on the same horizontal plane in the image. The opposite was true in Winder's case.

Image She still trying to chase the peloton.. Wouldn't be surprised if she's bonking hard and wasn't thinking straight. Then again.. She's from a small team in regional races mostly and used to open road races?

Interesting today cav didn't win, in fact he was the sole World Tour rider in the top10, finishing 4th. Hard to know which stage result represents his place in the peloton better? Experience & better team support helped him win 3 in a row, or what?
