>"why would they ever live like monks in order to try to be the best?"
EVERY amateur/hobbiest tries to be the best possible, and many live like monks. It's just that they (=we) are simply not talented enough, however hard training/living like monks.

To say the rider’s salary is grossly inflated is not representative of the reality. Unless you are top top level like the big names which probably comprises of 1-4% of the peloton, the rest of the domestique of world tour team earns in the region of high paying salary but less than say, top lawyers. Their salary also highly volatile with almost zero job security. The contract is only worth good amount at a very short period (their peak form) and gradually dip down, in contrast with normal white collar job which can only goes up if you are good at what you do.

Honestly if you have a choice between being a professional cyclist or getting in higher education, The former is generally a worse deal financial wise, unless your name is Froome, MVDP, or Sagan et al.

Miguel Angel Lopez signs with Movistar...

After a relatively bad season, maybe they are going back to their proven formula: internal fights and teammates racing against each others!

Heck yes, that he is "on the bike" is an awesome milestone in his recovery.
I wonder if his new teeth will be made of carbon, for an extra weight advantage?

No, they will have NACA-inspired truncated foil shapes for an aero advantage.

An extended article about the UCI's dealings with the dictatorship of Turkmenistan. The regime seems to think they will be hosting the UCI Road World Championships in 2026, while UCI are attempting to be as vague as possible issuing mostly non-denial statements. To the surprise of no-one Lappartient seems to be thoroughly corrupt…

with the UCI eSports champs coming up, is there any appetite on this board for a thread that would discuss these?

I would vote for a separate thread as to not pollute this one about real pro cycling and real racing with that crap... Just my personal opinion.

I second that... eSports needs to be separate so it can be more easily ignored

I do not mind the Zwift on bad weather days, or the last weeks of lockdown here when I cannot ride far from home. However I think as a serious racing platform it still has a long way to go. It is no entering to watch but makes training indoors more fun
