FAILURE Shimano Cranksets

Tiberi is quoted on CN saying "I had a mechanical problem, my crank broke, and so I thought it was all over."
'My crank broke' could cover a multitude of sins of course.

Another one this morning. Bought from Evans cycles new about 2.5 years ago so I guess no point in trying to pursue it.

Add me to the list. Caught this just in time as the pedal felt strange all of a sudden. No cracking noises that I can remember. 3.5 years old, 9,000k. No crashes etc. I will try for a warranty replacement but I'm not hopeful.
Happend to both my current series Dura Ace and Ultegra. I think i've posted 2 separate posts in this thread (with photos)

My Dura Ace 9100 cranks failed a while ago as well. They were replaced under warranty no issues.
However, planning some trips this summer and I don't want to risk them failing again.
Has anyone tried to run 5800 105 cranks with a 9100 Dura Ace groupset? As far as I know they are one piece aluminium cranks, not bonded, but, there would be a slight weight penalty which I'm perfectly fine with.

Aren't 5800 still forged hollow, instead of bonded?
That's why I'm considering them. Just wondering if there are any ,issues compatibility wise, as they are a different generation/design maybe?ghostinthemachine wrote:Aren't 5800 still forged hollow, instead of bonded?

I believe there is a slight spacing discrepancy so you might need to tweak the front derailleur slightly, it will work fine though.
You could probably also bring the weight down a bit by using the dura ace rings on the 5800 cranks (this might also mitigate the above adjustment requirement).
