I bought this 2012 Cervélo R3 Team last winter with the intention to build it up into a proper race bike. I sourced most parts used from a local bike forum and eBay.

Now it is a finished build that I am very happy with, it rides great and I feel like it fits me perfectly. But a build can always be improved so I've started to look for places to shed weight without making too much of a compromise. Please look at the component list and if you have a cost effective weight saving suggestion, I'd love to hear your input! :)

Nice build - it looks good.
Re: weight saving - I would start with cassette, tyres and tubes........, it depends on how deep your pockets are.

I haven't set a target weight but now that I think of it <6,90 kgs would be sweet.

Thank you for the list of specific suggestions, it's exactly what I was looking for! :)

I had my 56cm R3 Team down to 5.90kg so 6.90kgs shouldn’t be hard

Thank you Beancounter for the suggestion on the innertubes!

My first step towards making the bike lighter will be the suggestions I believe won't affect the good looks or comfort of the bike. Later I'll work my way down the list.

For now I have ordered these parts;

Cane Creek eeBrakes G4 ≈ -70 g (not very cost effective, but they look amazing!)
J&L titanium bowties and screws for the Speedplay pedals ≈ -11 g
Tubolito Tubo Road innertubes ≈ -158 g
Extralite Ultrastar 3 expander ≈ -33 g
J&L aluminum top cap ≈ - 5 g

Total = -277 g

Which ought to bring the total weight down to around 6787 g

To me a sub 6,8 kgs bike is just crazy light! :p

The Cane Creek G4:s are now mounted! They came in way 800€ at 515€ total with shipping from Hong Kong and customs fees.

More updates to come as the parts arrive. :)

I upgraded to titanium M5x35 bolts for the computer mount. I really like the conical head which matches the other stem screws.

Image
The steel ones that came with the computer mount ought to weigh around 6,5 g each and the titanium ones on the right 3,5 g, giving a weight saving of 6 g.

Should the computer itself (60g for the Wahoo Elmnt Bolt) be included in the total bike weight? and what about any speed and cadence sensors?

I ordered a Berk Lupina UD gloss 132mm, it should provide an additional 59 g weight saving over the Romin at ≈ 134 g. And more importantly I ordered a kitchen scale so I can check actual weights more accurately. :)

You just made me go and weigh my computer :P (57g for a Garmin Edge 500)

I don't include things in the bike weight that come on and off eg. computer, frame pump, saddle bag, lights. But I would include things that stay on all the time eg. speed & cadence sensors, pedals, bottle cages. Those last two seem to be things that some people don't include, as if they don't pedal their bike or carry any water when they're riding :noidea:.

The Tubolito innertubes surprised me with a black metal outer valve. Not like the orange ones in the pictures. Very nice! :)

Image
These innertubes are super easy to mount, way easier than regular butyl innertubes. What a nifty thing!

This Berk Lupina 132mm saddle is beautiful! The UD gloss makes it look interesting from every angle.

Image
I'm waiting for another saddlepost for the Berk saddle, an Mcfk which weigh 104 grams, 102 grams less than the S-works.

The new Mcfk seatpost, bought from a WW forum mebmer, arrived and I think it complements the Berk Lupina saddle well;
Image

The relaxed geometry of the Cervélo R3 made it difficult to get the proper tilt on the saddle without making the rail clamps look like they sit at an extreme angle. :/ I hope this is safe to ride on?
Image

With a more suitable scale I now have some actual weights. Surprisingly, adding up all the weights I've scavanged the internet for, I was off by 119 grams that are unaccounted for. :/ I need to take the components off the frame and measure everything individually to know for sure. I need to know! :p
Image

And this is what is looks like now, also with some Carbone bottle cages bought from another WW forum member. :)

Where to shed weight next?:

I finally got the fork expander and top cap installed, 7 grams for the expander and 4 grams for the top cap. :)

Image

I decided to go with the original colourscheme for the bike. It was covered with gloss black vinyl wrap which weighed 15 gram. So a little savings made there. :)
