It sounds like a horrible crash, hope he recovers ok in time, regardless of whether he competes again. I do remember Beloki’s crash... and I don’t recall him coming back at all.

Beloki did come back, but he was a different man, struggled to finish races and to get any kind of results. He did one Tour and one Vuelta but a full two years after his crash, and he struggled on his way to finish 75th and 40th on GC. He was set to start the Tour the following year but he was one of the names implicated in Operation Puerto and never raced again.

It's probably very hard to be precise and know for sure how the recovery will go, Beloki was fully recovered a few months later according to doctors but in reality, on the road, it was a different story.

Valverde... to use Gibo Simoni's words, he's extra-terrestrial, who knows what black magic he's using to cheat age/time/odds...

A good surprise news for Chris Froome, he just won another Grand Tour today. Juan José Cobo has just been disqualified from his Vuelta 2011 win, Froome was 2nd, Wiggins 3rd and Mollema 4th.

BBC News - Interview with surgeon who operated on Froome says 4hr op successful and he will make a full recovery, no real lasting damage.
So hopefully he will be back next season.

While life altering injuries, they won’t prevent him from coming back to racing. Coming back to the level he has been is a nearly an absolute NO in my mind. What separates these guys at the very top of sports is such a minute margin that he will no longer have above the competition. Is just that simple even when you take the mental aspect out of the equation. Then you add younger and up and comer guys that are breaking out this year and next. Possible? Sure. Speculation? Yes. Likely? Not really......

The biological passport is not really working if it takes them 8 years to ban someone. The biological passport seems more like a scare tactic than anything.

They say he caught the wind on his front wheel...is it usually standard practice to do a recon lap with such deep rims or? I can see it would make sense but also quite risky surely.

I don't how the pros prefer to do it, but if recon's and race's conditions are expected to resemble closely, in my opinion the recon should be used to test the equipment as well as see and feel the route. So it would be beneficial to use race equipment.

By the way, pros usually seem to ride relatively shallow front wheels on their TT bikes. I think many are on 50-60mm fronts, as 80mm is a viable option as well.
