Upgrading to DA disc brake rotors

Hi team,

I need some help/confirmation. Wanting to upgrade a few things; especially the disc brake rotors to Dura Ace: https://si.shimano.com/pdfs/ev/EV-BR-R9170-4074.pdf

Do I need to upgrade the brake calipers as well? I think I need these particular resin pads: https://www.wiggle.com.au/shimano-road- ... ked-au-1/ ? But can't find them anywhere? Any suggestions if they are the right ones?

Basically I put a lot of value on quiet disc brakes etc, but want the best I can get.

If you put value on quiet brakes, don’t buy Shimano rotors!

The resin pads are Shimano code L02a. No you don’t need to upgrade callipers, all Shimano callipers are the same just with different finishes.

The only benefit you are going to get from upgrading to DuraAce rotors is a bit of weight savings, and (subjective aesthetics.

There might be some additional cooling benefits due to the materials the DA rotor is made from.

All Shimano rotors are the same dimension, and are compatible with all of their calipers.

Best way to keep your brakes quiet is to make sure the rotors are perfectly true (I use a Feedback Sports truing stand, but there are other ways), and then make sure your calipers are centered over the rotor once the wheel is installed.

I changed from RT99 rotors to a combination of Dura Ace at the front and Sram at the back
There was no real discernible difference in stopping ability but a few grams saved

Put Shimano on front sram on back Just to see is one was more squeaky...found no real difference between Dura Ace, Sram and RT99

Also tried Swiss Stop Pads 34 RS...I like them, they bed in well and have been noise free

Agree with what has been said and would add that regularly cleaning callipers is worth the hassle

Thanks! Why is the L02A so hard to find?! Out of stock everywhere I see online . Any ideas?

Right, so the Swiss Stop Pads 34 RS would work with the DA rotors and Ultegra brake calipers?

Yeah disc brakes are more prone to noise than rim brakes, something proponents never mention. not always, but certainly whenever roads are wet and dirty,
Ie when they are supposed to be ‘better’. Maybe you will never ride in the rain or your roads are pristine.....

Ah brilliant, thanks. I want Shimano, just -given same brand. But this should get me out of a jam. No idea why no-one as stock anywhere.

You think Shimano Rotors are noisy when it's wet and dirty? You should hear them when it's -6C out. They squeal like pigs. 1st Gen Ice Tech Rotors with Hope RX4's and Campy Potenza Shifters.

The combo works fine above 0C - no noise. It may be the Hope Pads.
