Seems kind of odd to me for a recreational guy sitting bolt upright to put up with all the inconvenient details of these super aero bikes, but they are likely not doing the work on the bike, so as long as it rides nice, who cares? With regards to the Hinault pic, note that he (and lots of other guys at that time) were using deep drop bars, so they could get low in the drops and hoods. Those kinds of bends are few and far between these days.

Aesthetically, it will take a moment for the ''slam your stem'' people to adapt to that fact.

You might not like the look (and I'm not sure that I do) but the strongest and lightest way to join two parts is a straight line.

Keeping the position the same, a stem that goes up and then across like a number '7' is going to be heavier and more flexible than one that takes a direct route to the bars.

For optimal performance on a standard bike, remove the conical spacer and any standard spacers from under your stem, fit a cover with the lowest possible stack, add a stem with a slight rise, and trim the steerer shorter to match. Same position. No spacers and less steerer tube = lighter. Straighter line = stiffer.

Then, ignore the fasion police and let your riding do the talking

So are aero shoe covers, aero helmets, gloves, skinsuits etc. The point is that aesthetics matter: slammed stems are aesthetically superior and always will be.

Do you guys think that skinny racers training 20 hours a week can afford $8-15K super bikes? The 200 guys riding on the world tour certainly don't buy them. Neo pros and cat ones making peanuts don't buy their own super bikes out of pocket. Who actually buys them? Normal blokes with jobs who like to ride bikes, that is who actually pays money for these bikes and keeps bicycle companies in business. Some of those guys are fast and some of those guys are slow. So what? Either rider will be faster on an aero bike. End of story.

This attitude that one doesn't deserve an aero bike if they can't ride it without spacers is simply ridiculous. Bernard Hinault rode with the equivalent of a giant spacer stack.

Agree with you completely, so many lads on this thread, and on the forum in general, who talk complete and utter shite. It's sad that the growth in cycling's popularity, which in itself is an extremely positive situation and to be welcomed, has also seen an exponential rise in this ugly level of snobbery and elitism at the amateur level.

I really do like the new Cervélo S5. I think the front end looks great and is a smart new direction.

However, the linked example is typical Fred parts selection. Anytime I see a saddle tilted down like that I make assumptions and they aren’t that the rider is a highly skilled and knowledgeable cyclist.

There is one of these in a local bike shop to me, in black, and I think it does look good. It is on a raised platform, above another bike, so hard to properly examine the stem.
They also have the new aero Cannondale which doesn't do anything for me at all.
