Hi,

I am currently on a 100mm -6 degree stem with 79mm reach handlebar. Considering to change to an integrated handlebar/stem option. If the integrated handlebar has a reach of 69mm and its stem is -8 degree, should I get a 100mm, 110mm or 120mm length option? The handlebar reach difference is 10mm, to compensate it looks like I need to go 110mm lengh? Appreciate any advice given on this situation. Thanks!

I think you answered your own question!
Going for spec, it is 110mm

:D I am just not sure whether the 2 degree would make any difference on the length choice.

Assuming a 73d HT, 100, -6 stem would give you 38mm rise and 92mm reach (to add to frame S&R). With the same HTA, a 100 -8 stem would give you 35mm & 93mm respectively.

I'd call that pretty much a no change unless you are getting paid large sums to ride.

OTOH, going to a 110 -8 would be + 36mm & 103mm.

Where is the handlebar reach comes into play in this calculations?

Stem comparison tool
I found this the other day. So is the Total Reach = Stem Length + Handlebar Reach? This is the part that is not clear to me, and how the stem angle plays into the total reach calculations.

I've never seen a "total reach calculation". I think you are at the point where you just need to make an educated guess.

First, if you go from a 10cm to an 11cm stem, the tops of your bars will be 1cm farther away. Is that ok? If not, then stick with the 10cm stem.

Second, if you think it's ok to increase the reach of the tops of the bars and you like your current lever reach then go for the 11cm stem on these new shorter reach bars. Your levers should remain in roughly the same position.

The reach to the levers is also influenced by how high or low you mount the levers and the shape of the bend on the bars. Like I said, at this point you just need to make an educated guess. In the end it's only 1cm either way. You'll probably get used to whatever you do.

Yes.

For example I run the 3T ergosum (89mm reach) on a 130mm -6 degree stem set up.

That means potentially I would have to run a 140mm stem with a shorter bar reach, or 150mm with even shorter. etc.

If the bar reach was more, for example the 3t aeronova bars (104mm reach) I'd have to run a 110-120mm stem. etc.

The stem angle does come into play too, use the calculator to see.

However, as the above poster mentions, it is all about making an educated guess because bar angle and hood placement is very different for most people.

Smply plug the 100 -8 stem and 100 -6 stem calcs to your existing bikes stack and reach so you can see the different touch point.

As mentioned, there is only 3mm change to rise and 1mm change to reach. Its really n/a.
