Using a single 46 front and a 40-11 rear with the standard mount. No issues. B screw is about half wound out.

I've done a fair amount of rides since the last updtate, and I must say it works/rides really well. No problems at all, and no chaindrops at all. I've done gravel, singletracks and a bit of mtb tracks as well. Lots of bumpy roads with no issues.

Later this year I'm gonna test it with 50/34 chainrings paired with a 11-34 cassette.
I used a 52/34 with 11-34 cassette.. works perfect

I have a 8000 GS RD (not RX but same geometry) and a 11-40 cassette on my tandem. Shifts perfectly and no Roadlink needed. On my other bike I have the 8050 GS and a 11-34. I really like the new Ultegra RD.

Hey guys,
Great thing I've found this topic, I'm planning something similar.
At the moment I have 50x34, 11-36 Ultegra GS 6870 Di2 with a RoadLink.
I want to switch to 1x, with 40something, 11-42. My struggle is, if I need a new rear derailleur or not?
And there's two parts to that question: Will my current RD handle that cassette (with the RoadLink of course)? Will it work without a clutch deraulier?
Does anybody has real world experience with a setup like this?

Thanks! I ordered so we'll see how it all works.

yes that will work. you have more than enough capacity for basically any 1x setup and with the roadlink wrap won't be a problem.

Any disadvantage of going with the long cage versus the short/medium ?

Is there a "long" cage Ultegra? I thought it was only short or medium.

The 'long' model is the GS. The GS can only be used with 11-32 or 11-34. You could probably fit a 11-30. The non-GS is the medium cage which takes upto a 11-30. In reality the newer 'shadown' design of the RD can be adjusted using the B-screw and the GS can take upto a 11-40, and possibly a 11-42 without a Roadlink.

The 6800 series GS can handle cassettes from 11-28 to 11-32. The 8000 series GS can handle from 11-28 to 11-34.

That's the max "recommended" spec. I use a 6800 GS RD on a 12-25 cassette, when I'm on the trainer, with no problems. I also used to use it on my CX bike to ride an 11-34 cassette (again, with no problems).

Have never been aware of a minimum cassette for the GS. On one bike I use the SS and an 11-30 no issues.

Shimano specifies minimum and maximum cassette sizes for all of their derailleurs. But as mentioned, the limits are quite conservative. I run an 11-30 on my 6870-ss (short cage) with no hint of a problem, even though its max supported size is 11-28. I wouldn't be surprised if I could run an 11-32, too.

How are you guys finding the shifting (front and rear)?

Being the inquisitive guy that I am, I had one installed on my bmc slr01 disc. Yes I know, that makes me a Hubbard. Image
