Seeking 27.5 (650b) rim brake wheelset
Moderator: Moderator Team
I know that my choices are limited when it comes to rim brake wheels. My goal is to mount Compass 650Bx42 Babyshoe Pass on my endurance bike with Velo Orange Grand Cru long-reach brakes. I'm looking for something on a budget, like Velocity CliffHanger http://store.velocityusa.com/p/cliffhan ... nger?pp=12
What else is out there?
When it comes to rim profile, I'd like at least ~30mm wide.

* You won't reach around a 42mm tire with mid-reach brakes - you need true long reach, which means Tektro r559, or something cheap from Dia Compe or off an old BMX.
* If you want 25mm internal, rim choice is severely limited. I'm running 42s and 48s without problems on Pacenti Brevets with 19mm internal width. At these widths, you can also use A23s and HED Belgiums.
* What frame and fork do you have to have so much tire clearance? Very unusual.

Sorry, the Velo Orange Grand Cru is long reach (47-57mm) and the Tektro R559 are extra long (55-73mm). Looks like 650b Babyshoe with Tektro R559 will workMarin wrote: ↑Thu Jul 26, 2018 8:31 am* You won't reach around a 42mm tire with mid-reach brakes - you need true long reach, which means Tektro r559, or something cheap from Dia Compe or off an old BMX.

$450 is actually not bad for Pacenti Brevet wheels https://pacenticycledesign.com/collecti ... ed-shimano
How does Tektro R559 perform? At that height, I'd imagine they are flexy.

Yes, indeed.
We must have the same Whisky No. 7 fork. Looks like it will clear ~47mm tire? https://bikerumor.com/2017/01/17/whisky ... -road-plus. Whoa, that means Compass 48mm Switchback could clear the fork. I doubt that it will clear in the rear due to 415mm chainstays. How long are the chainstays on your Heretic?
I was never impressed with R55C4 (Dura Ace pads). I'm runnning Kool-Stop salmon pads on all bikes, rain or shine.
If I'm not mistaken, you mentioned that knobby tires don't serve much purpose on gravel. I don't have the source handy but I belive that Jan Heine backup this statement.
When it comes to 650 conversation, it's a bit of hassle to switch brakes from Tektro R559 (e.g. too long to work on 700c rim) to VO Grand Cru, everytime I want to ride gravel.
This is where the versatality of disc frames really shine.

Yes, I didn't ride the Gravelking SKs much. Even if I rode a very gravel-focused event like Torino-Nice I'd probably stay on slicks, 42 or 47mm.
My go-to setup is 42mm Pari-Motos tubeless, they do everything well and are *very* fast on tarmac. This is a setup you can run for road & gravel.
Yes, same Whisky fork, will clear 48mm easily. I designed the Heretic to have 47mm clearance in the rear too, with 420mm stays. Check your chainstay clearance at 315mm from the dropouts, that minus about 2x5mm is the tire width you can run.

Hmmm...are you sure that it’s 315mm? I measured 355mm from the fender mount to dropouts. It’s quite narrow by the fender mount, ~32mm.Marin wrote: ↑Fri Jul 27, 2018 7:39 amYes, I didn't ride the Gravelking SKs much. 650b topic aside, is it safe to run 28mm Vitoria latex tube in 35mm Bon Jon? I know that latex expand much more than bytul but 35mm tire is a lot of volume.

Widest point of the tire is @ 315mm IIRC, radius to the tread is 338 for a 47mm tire.
I ran exactly those tubes in the Bon Jons, but they are now set up tubeless.

I think it's the mention in the last post. But it barely qualifies as information: "Oh, and I had 650b carbon rim brake rims made which built into a 1070g wheelset. Didn't test them yet though,..." - Marin
He doesn't say anything more.
I know one option is the Cherchio Ghisallo with the internal carbon reinforcement, but i suspect the braking performance might be a bit down relative to a modern carbon brake track treatment. Then again, those are on the +500g side of things anyway.

it's actually possible to come to the conclusion even before realising it makes no sense at all

What do you want to know? Wheels are still unridden BTW.

I asked Kinlin about this and they confirmed that the XR31 will be available in 650b size, both for rim brakes (XR31T) and disc brake (XR31TS). Sadly no asymmetric version From the datasheet they sent me: ERD 532.5mm, weight 460 gram; the same datasheet lists the 700c version as 570.5mm and 490 gram.
No response (yet) when asked about when these would be available.

Good to know. Looks like rim profile is not much different next to Pacenti Brevet. Both have ~19mm inner and 23-24mm outer. Weight is ~460 grams. Kinlin is twice as deep though at 31mm, where Pacenti Brevet is 15mm. If Kinlin release 24 spokes that would be the only weight savings since Pacenti Brevet is only 28 spokes.DutchMountains wrote: ↑Tue Aug 14, 2018 6:45 pmI asked Kinlin about this and they confirmed that the XR31 will be available in 650b size, both for rim brakes (XR31T) and disc brake (XR31TS). Speaking of rim profile, doesn't Hunt use Kinlin XR31 rim? www.huntbikewheels.com/collections/road ... eep-24wide. Recently, I reached out to them asking whether 650b is in the pipeline. They said "no". Polished wheels are aesthetically pleasing.
