Rs785 calipers with 9170 levers?
Moderator: robbosmans
I upgraded from RS-785 brake shift, to a combination of 9170 hoods, 1 old RS-785 caliper, and one 9170 caliper. (due to Australian availability being limited on caliper and hood combinations)
In short, it works fine.
The hardest part was sourcing the flanged connector (M9) bolt, which was not included with the single 9170 shifter I purchased.

If you order a retail boxed shifter set, then hoses should be included but OEM shifter sets will depend on the seller.eaglejackson wrote: ↑Mon Apr 30, 2018 4:36 amDo the R91x0 shifters include the proper hoses or do they need to be ordered separately? Thanks.

I am running 9120 levers with the RS785 brakes (post-mount). This came to me on a complete build, but I think there are some big differences if one orders just the 9120 or 9170 levers only, or the levers plus the 9170 flat-mount brakes. I believe if ordering just the lever then that is pretty much all you get. No hoses, no connector nut, etc. If it is levers with brake calipers then it comes with everything. This is how a local shop explained it to me. I had a defective left 9120 lever and had to have it replaced. Since it was time sensitive I ended up ordering the lever plus caliper as no one online had levers only.ms6073 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 30, 2018 4:07 pmIf you order a retail boxed shifter set, then hoses should be included but OEM shifter sets will depend on the seller.eaglejackson wrote: ↑Mon Apr 30, 2018 4:36 amDo the R91x0 shifters include the proper hoses or do they need to be ordered separately? Edit: And I fully expect Shimano will make good on the warranty, I just needed the lever ASAP so that is why I bought one.

the 9170 shifters are starting to come down in price slowly makinng them more attractive to buy.
has anyone put 9170 shifters on BH59 hoses?
reason i ask is that curreently i have 785 shifters with BH59 hoses and cbf changing the hoses.
do the BH60 offer better lever throw?

I have 9170 shifters with bh59 (the fork is a post mount, so had to use a 785 caliper.)
The rear caliper is, however, 9170 with bh90. I can't tell the difference in the lever throw....
Thanks.2old4this wrote:I have 9170 shifters with bh59 (the fork is a post mount, so had to use a 785 caliper.)

My forks are the same Post mount and rears are direct mount.
I was thinking of using 9170 shifters with current DA calipers on existing BH59 hoses.
Anyone know what the differences are between the 785 calipers and the new DA ones?

9170 is direct mount, 785 is post. Other than this, I really don't know what the difference is.
One word if caution, though. For the front, I used a 160mm rotor. The Shimano adaptor for it is 180. Don't know why the adaptor is named that way...

I cannot give a direct answer as we have only used BH-90 hoses with DA ST-9170 levers on our road bikes. On our CX/Gravel bikes we have ST-R785 shifters paired with BR-RS785 post mount calipers front and rear which I originally setup with BH-59 and found to work well. After we got 9170 on our road bikes, I got curious and opted to swap out the BH-59 with BH-90 and did notice what I felt was a slightly stiffer lever throw but that may well have been due simply to having had more practice with the brake bleeding process than the first time around. So from my reading, while BH-90 is the hose referenced for all the new road hydro offerings, I think the answer will really depend on a persons level of OCD as I have been curious about if/how well Jagwire's hydraulic brake hose offerings would work for these types of setups.

I can swear my levers actually came with a pair of oil bottles and hoses, so I'm afraid your 9120 was actually defective in this regard. Or perhaps you bought a "pre-bled" version? Not really sure about other items such as bolts, inserts and olives, they might belong to the package of brake calipers.Bigger Gear wrote: ↑Tue May 01, 2018 5:45 amI believe if ordering just the lever then that is pretty much all you get. I think you need to recheck that as I have both at home and as you can see from the following web images, in the first image, the BR-RS805 would appear to have a different shape as compared to the BR-R9170 brake caliper:

Yes, I believe the lever and caliper I bought were the "pre-bled" version with the fluid already in the lever and caliper.Cemicar wrote: ↑Fri Jun 08, 2018 5:56 amI can swear my levers actually came with a pair of oil bottles and hoses, so I'm afraid your 9120 was actually defective in this regard. apart from the slight aesthetics difference, I would say they are essentially the same caliper underneath
9170 never let me down.
I must say it was extremely entertaining with funky fruit slots. No doubt about that. Right now I learn how to win daily. Wanna know how?
