Test the strap. Had a similar thing and the strap turned out to be the culprit.

Some other app is stealing the connection or iOS permissions

Pair it with the app, and not with your phone.
iPhone is a culprit for this as it then tried using it in apple health.

which heart rate monitor are you using?
I use the apple watch with a similar result.
Typically i have to pair it two times. First in the pairing screen, second time, in the game by disabling the app on the watch. It will reopen automatically (bug or feature?), connect and once it shows "in game", connection will keep working. if "Selected" appears only, than i will have to do it once again.
Kind of annoying but now show stopper

Thanks lozean, sounds like a mess about but worth it I guess.(it’s a garmin HR strap)
I’m still running without the aid of my heart rate, it’s there to see on my garmin but not as yet on the tv screen, I’m still trying to get a reliable PM-watt reading without dropping off usually in the sprint or at the top of the Alpe 😡

On which device are you running Zwift in general.
I use it either on the Ipad or a Macbook and an Elite smarttrainer with bluetooth or sometimes get the power readings from the Assioma pedals, also using Bluetooth. Never had any issues with any of those devices.
Are you using ANT-based transmission or Bluetooth in general?

I concur, same experiences I have had. The work around I use is to shut off BT on my phone, connect to zwift and zwift companion and then turn BT back on the phone. I found that the wahoo app and health apps like to borrow the HRM BT signal.
