could magnesium suplementation improve performance?

A light bike doesn't replace good fitness.

i've been taking magnesium l-threonine for the past 2 weeks

just got back from an excruciating event and did FAR better than i have in years. despite barely having ridden at all in the past 3 weeks, and riding on about 2.5 hours sleep.

i know magnesium is good for the heart

Although there is no doubt magnesium is an important nutriment, it seems there is no real scientific evidence of improved performance with magnesium supplementation on healthy, trained athletes.

It helps me greatly in eliminating evening leg cramps. Nothing else works for me.

Ive been using it for 4-5 years. I used to have really bad restless leg and "twitchiness" when I was riding a lot, especially in the summer (Florida). A week or so into Mg supplements, it was all gone. There is some research showing its benefits for endurance athletes, in particular heavy sweaters. Its a very important supplement that is difficult to get accurate measurements on what you have stored via CBC blood work.

I have found I sleep a LOT better with it (and have some pretty crazy dreams). Combine that with some tumeric at night and youre golden... And speaking of "golden", Golden Milk worked really well for me in conjunction with Mg.

The only downside is if you take too much, you poop more.

Much like others above I've found taking Mg helps me sleep and recover much better after a ride.
I find it takes a few nights of taking them to feel the effect though.

I've tried Magnesium Glycinate.... its foul but it works. A hint of sweetness then a foul seafood upon swallowing.

I’m also interested in this. I live in FL and sweat a lot in the summer. From cycling and from just doing work in the shop or outside. I could also use some help with twitchy legs at night, and just getting a better nights sleep overall.
I read the WedMD article on magnesium supplements and it does seem to have a lot of possible benefits.

I read doses under 350mg per day are considered safe. So how much are you guys taking?

400mg.

I just started taking it after reading this thread. I do feel I sleep better at night including some crazy dreams. As far as any performance benefits on the bike it’s too early to judge. I suffer from leg cramps on long climbs but I haven’t done any long climbs lately. What I don’t like about it is the pooping part. It turns my poop into the shape of a big ball. It turns my bathroom trips into child-birth exercises Is anyone else having the same problem? Perhaps I should cut down my dose but all I have now are 400mg gel capsules.
