Are you getting enough sleep? I had a sleepless night (wife was sick, snoring was loud enough to rattle windows) and did a 1500m climb the next morning. Cramped so bad, but was lucky to be riding with physiotherapists who straightened me out immediately. The cramps returned several times in the same ride but they managed to keep me going. I've never cramped before so it was a very new thing. Slept like a rock the next 2 days (and kicking my wife into the living room) and was able to do a 500m climb without cramping.

Most cramping is hydration/electrolyte in nature. If correcting that doesn't work, look to see if your putting too much stress on the medial aspect of your knee during the pedal stroke (Q-angle). If that isn't a problem you may have some soft tissue dyskinesis and need some Active Release Technique from a Chiropractor/physio to restore normal muscular movement.
