You'd make a great mod around here.

"This thread" being the one we are talking about, obvisously not the one we are on.

Great to see you've got some constructive thoughts.

Simple misunderstanding, then. It wasn't so obvious to me.

This forum is ridiculously over-moderated. Besides, as I've mentioned before, it seems the moderators don't even know their own rules:

Road Forum Rules:

If you posted a topic that the moderators feel is not in the spirit of Weight Weenies it will be moved to the Cycle chat forum. We will move it without leaving a notification from the Road forum to the Cycle chat forum.
Please take a look over there if your post is missing.

Thanks,

the moderator team.

Cycle Chat Forum Rules:

This forum is your casual lounge for all cycling related issues.

No doubt this will be deleted like the last time I mentioned it.

Thanks for starting the thread in Fairwheelbikes - I liked this forum as it brought more technical discussion than others, hopefully that can be found at fairwheelbikes so that this feudal system can be ignored.

Thank you for your post, it was very interesting to read. We will continue to read this thread, but I have to add that insulting posts will not help in bringing it back. There have been enough warnings and we have deleted numerous posts that didn't have something to add.
In the early years the thread moderated itself and people took their own responsibilities. We never had to draw up rules for the thread because of that. After the lock you have asked for guidelines we gave them to you. They were posted in the first post and in a new post in the thread. They were to be repeated for a week on every new page that would be created.
Even after the guidelines were posted people decided to not to read them and post anyhow.

I hope this helps to understand the decision a little bit better. People will still call this BS, but remember that this is Weight Weenies, not ProBikeLovers forum.

Thanks

The Pro thread was starting to lag in quality with lots of useless chat about unrelated things. The mods gave us plenty of warnings and even locked the thread for a day, but we didn't take heed. I don't think we have anyone but ourselves to blame.

Agreed. Way to many "That is fugly" in there. Really, a lot of comments with no value at all and questions asked twice on the same page.

I don't know, but I guess I only saw half of them because the mods had deleted most of 'em. I don't know how much time exactly it takes to delete a post, but I guess it involves a lot of nerve wrecking, why did you delete my post pm waste of time.

And how difficult can it be to use the reply function instead of having the same pics 4 times on the same page?

tcurtbike wrote:On another note, I think the time of year has an impact on the thread's quality. There are periods between the bigger races when there isn't really anything on and coverage is lacking and as such there really isn't much to talk about that is directly related to new gear or interesting PRO mods. It's in these periods when the quality starts to take a dive, and OT discussion starts.

Maybe that would be a way to get a handle on it? Have seperate threads for the begining of the season, Le Tour, WCs or soemthing like that.

Frankie, I have no doubt you have some historical perspective, but the big question whether you're in touch with the way things are now and how they should be. It's clear from the responses here that you're out of touch and should reverse course.

You're right about WW being bigger than the Pro Equipment thread, but that thread was part of the community, and a very popular one at that. In the name of preserving your idea of WW, you've changed it from a community environment to "Frankie B's Latest Whim" and the negative effect spans far beyond the one thread in question to the entire forum.

Thank you for your reply, but we should not forget that a forum provides you a platform to discuss items. The spirit and original idea of the forum is different and we do not want it to drift from that.
It is for shure understood that people want to discuss such stuff but Weight Weenies is not the right place for it.

Trying to control and dictate social media always leads to a epic fail.

The spirit of the forum is what the submitted content of +14000 users make of it over the years - not what a couple moderators happen to have on their minds.

Moderators are there to serve the users, not the opposite way.

While I dont agree on taking off one of the most interesting topics on this board, it's also true that this is a private place so they can do whatever they want with it.

Personally saddened by the removal of the Pro thread, was a good spot to see the latest kit sneaking into the public arena.

But to all the people posting offensive and derogatory posts aimed at the moderators, please think before posting! Really not doing yourself a favour or improving the chances of having the thread revived...

And remember this is a private forum where the costs to host are being covered. If you don't like the way the moderating is being handled, it's easy enough to put your money where your mouth is and install some phpBB software and start your own forum. Just please remember to post the url so we can check it out.

So that's it, Frankie? You've made a final decision that WW "is not the right place" for the most popular and longest-running thread in the road forum?

Don't be a fool. Reverse course. We'll live and let live and this will all be water under the bridge by the time Tour spy shots start rolling in.

Real shame that thread is gone, I understand what the original focus of the forum was as I've lurked for >5years but it had become the best place to discuss equipment on the web and that was the first thread I went to. I'll probably visit WW less now.

I realise that the mods can do whatever they want, I realise that sometimes there was a lot of noise and not very much signal in that thread but really, WTF? It's a discussion board.

Sad times, odd actions.

Frankie,

I understand your opinion, but the problem is that you have allowed members here to discuss "such stuff" for such a long period of time that it has become part of the forum. If you had really put your foot down several years ago when things were first starting to stray from the "vision" it would be understandable, but you waited too long. You allowed the forum to become what it is today, like it or not.

If you try to forcefully take things back to the good ol' days you will loose several thousand forum members.

I don't think that anyone could really argue that saving 100 grams in your brakes is really going to make you faster, or win a race blah blah blah. I've never finished a race thinking, boy if I had that lighter saddle, I would have won, instead of getting second.

To me, WW is really about bike porn, which I totally enjoy. I like seeing what the pros are actually riding, as opposed to what their sponsor arrangement is. The pro equipment page gave me that info.

So yeah, if I need to know the virtues of carbon fiber brake pad holders, or titanium valve stems, I can come here. But if I want to see what the best cyclists in the world are really riding (and you know they won't pay out of pocket for something unless it really is an advantage), I now have to go elsewhere.

Too bad.

Where is this idea defined? And when do you delete the other 95% of the threads that most likely violate it?
