gravel carbon crankset compatible with grx chainrings
Moderator: Moderator Team
Are there any carbon cranksets that have or can be adapted to a grx chain line (151 q-factor iirc vs 146 for road) and accept grx chainrings? I find Shimano's grx line of cranks fairly limited in crank length options and am curious to try something a bit lighter. Any suggestions? From what I see of the carbon cranksets on places like pandapodium, they typically use a road chain line, a 30mm axle, or the spider is a road 110 bcd. Is there any alternative to just running the Shimano cranks?

I’m using the Rotor Aldhu Carbon 155mm cranks paired with a P2M GX PM and Shimano GRX chainrings. Rotor cranks (the light versions) are modular and you could use either a standard or an offset spindle to get the correct chain line. I use the standard spindle on my road bike and the offset version on my gravel bike. For either setup you’ll need a thinner BSA30 BB cup. This is an issue with the specific PM and not the cranks themselves. Not sure if P2M has fixed the issue.

Thanks! Looking over the product page, https://rotorbike.com/rotor-aldhu-carbon-cranks.html, it's not clear to me how I get the offset spindle. Oh, I think I've found the spindle product page: https://rotorbike.com/rotor-road-gravel-axle-24-mm.html
Only the alloy cranks use the 24mm spindle. For the carbon cranks you need the 30mm version. I bought mine in N.A. so I just sent an email to the N.A. P2M (not Rotor) distributor listing the parts that I needed (Rotor carbon cranks, spindle, and P2M PM), and they generated an invoice for payment. P2M is a partner with Rotor. So you could order any Rotor cranks directly from P2M. If you're not buying a PM then you'll need a compatible spider that will fit the Rotor carbon cranks and the Shimano GRX chainrings. I believe one does exist but I don't know the name. You don't want to use any Rotor branded gravel chainrings. I've gone that path before and it didn't end well. Stick with Shimano chainrings.
