What other 2x cassette choices are available besides the 11-36 from the 105 group? Is MS Road only needed for 1x? Aee all 2x cassettes starting with the 11T?
I just got a JFOYH 11-36. Have yet to ride it. It's definitely very light.

MicroSpline Road would only be needed for cassette with a 10t cog and up to a 32t cog, so who knows if we’ll actually see it or not. I don’t think Shimano should have ever bothered to release HG-EV…it’s pointless and no one else has adopted it.

I see. So to use an XTR 10-51 cassette for 1x you would need the MSR freehub but also add a spacer behind the 51T cog. Or you could build up a new wheelset using a MTB hub with MS freehub, to create better spoke angles for a stronger wheel. And since someone said the GRX chainring sizes will carry over from 11-speed, I assume all 2x 12-speed cassettes will start with the 11T, hence no need for the MSR freehub.

While I get that a lot of people like to pedal very slowly, I'm having a hard time believing that 46/48x11 isn't a high enough gear, especially for off-road use. Lots of people have been using things like 11-42 cassettes with the existing GRX RDs to get lower gears for things like the Tour Divide, Transcontinental Race, etc.

Personally, I'd like to see *smaller* chainrings, not bigger - TA sell 44x28 to fit GRX, which is getting there. As for 10T cogs, fair enough if you want maximum range for 1x, but with 2x you just end up with a even more unusable top gear. I'd rather see 44x28 or 42x26 rings plus 11-42 or 11-44 12 speed cassettes, not 50x34 plus 10-21...

Okay, this is getting interesting. Also available from April 2023 or no date? Chain ring apparently staying the same, and 11-36 cassette. 31/36 is a very small gear, which is great.
The 11 speed grx810 2x RD will clear a 36 easily. Have a sram 11-36 on the revolt now.
Same setup here on my Warbird

Or they could still have a wide range 10-xx cassette, but make the gap between chainrings smaller. This would improve front shifting and make the experience of front shifting more pleasant in general. I suspect a large part of the reason why 1x people complain about the "hassle" of front derailleurs is the massive gap between chainrings. Every single one of my bikes has had a front derailleur, so I have no issues knowing how to use one, but even I sometimes get annoyed by needing to up/downshift a million gears when switching rings on my 50/34.

Personally this is one of the reasons why I'd like to see the return of triples, but that seems like a very unpopular opinion :D

I'd agree. My "race" set-up for chunky/loose/rowdy rides is 46/30 x 11-36. My "regular" flat gravel set-up is with 11-32 cassette. I don't believe I have ever used 46x11 combo on gravel; on road, I may have used it once or twice -- very rarely here in my hilly area. Of course, I no longer chase 50 MPH going downhill. haha

I mean, don't all GRX RDs have clutches?

Last I've heard (that was before official 105 announcement) 105 mechanical (hydro disc only) was scheduled for april 2023.
I didn't have any updates, but it looks like it is still possible.
If i will see any 105 mechanical spec bike listing in 2023/2024 catalogs I will post it here - viewtopic.php?t=169761

as there will be no levers for rim brakes... when the GRX and the 105 come out... if someone dares to try to insert or see if it is possible to combine the 12 mechanism in a current 11 lever... ....

There is no such thing as Micro Spline Road. It is Micro Spline. End of!

It'll be interesting to see where they go with this. If they do indeed add MicroSpline Road, a 48/31x10-36t would have an absolutely massive range, like 557%
Having run 44/30 & 10-36 11 speed I am looking forward to dumping the 10 asap. It's a pointless exercise. You can feel the extra friction on road and it's too high to use off-road.

I'm looking forward to 48/31 or 46/30 & 11-36 12 speed.
