Looking to build a light setup on a Cyclocross race bike. WIll build it with 1 X 11S group.
NOw I'm trying to find the best gearing option for north american style CX.
I was thinking somehting along 38T and 11-34 or 40T and 11-36, but I'm surprised there is no 11S light options for those two cassettes :cry: :shock: !!

Or did I MIss something the last few years ...?

Louis :)

ali link €70.97 ($81.29); ali link €74.54 ($85.37)

Shimano cassettes have most accurate cassette jumps, if you want this your options are XTR and XT cassettes (edit: and sroad)
if you're ok with overdrive or underdrive cassette progression, there are a few more other options:

293g 11-40T 11-13-15-17-19-21-24-27-31-35-40 = sroad steel = ali link (edit: added, thanks to satanas)
295g 11-42T 11-12-14-16-19-21-24-28-32-37-42 = ztto alu = ali link
330g 11-40T 11-13-15-17-19-21-24-27-31-35-40 = XTR
389g 11-40T 11-13-15-17-19-21-24-28-32-36-40 = Sunrace
411g 11-40T 11-13-15-17-19-21-24-27-31-35-40 = XT

Cheapest one will be Sunrace, but it not very durable and I don't like 24-28 jump

I'm running 46T with Sram PG-1170 11-36. For flat sections it's okay for the most part, but sometimes the jumps between the gears are to high. You either spin 105rpm or 89-90 to keep about 35kmh with no middle ground. 40T could be handy for climbing in the saddle (gravel sections) where traction is crucial

What are the reviews on this cassette ? I bought EDCO monoblock ones (11-32) a while back and they were not very good with Sram drivetrain (as were also Sram 11-32 cassettes :x :lol: ).

I'd go with Shimano CS-HG800 11-34 for the shifting quality.

I see sroad also have an 11-40 with the same cogs as Shimano, however it's not clear from the description what they're made from. If there are several alu cogs it's likely these will wear rapidly and shift poorly too (compared to Shimano). If the shifting is going to be crap I for one don't care how light it is, but this is one of those "YMMV" things...

Saw this onehttps://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000308 ... 5561%22%7D. The claim it's made of steel, but it comes in at 293g, which makes me seriously doubt it.

It does have the same gaps as the Shimano XTR 11-40, however.

This claim is used to describe multiple cassettes that was listed in one lot,
for 11-40 this is not true, may be it is true for other cassette in this lot (but I have some doubts about that too).
Actual materials list for 11-40T from sroad official chinese and english catalogue:
类型:山地
名称:WSD-8011-1140-A1
速别:11S
尺寸:Φ163×43mm
齿数:11-40T (11-13-15-17-19-21-24-27-31-35-40)
重量:293g
材质:低碳铬钼钒钢+航空铝合金
安装:常规卡式塔基
TYPE:MTB
NAME:WSD-8011-1140-A1
SPEEDS:11S
SIZE:Φ163×43mm
GEARS:11-40T (11-13-15-17-19-21-24-27-31-35-40)
WEIGHT:293g
MATERIAL:Chrome Molybdenum Vanadium Steel+Aircraft-Grade Aluminum Alloy
FIT:Shimano Freehub
From next picture, 40T looks like alloy and 11-13-15-17-19-21-24-27-31-35 looks like steel, they are riveted.
Materials can be verified by magnet, may be this seller can do that if you ask politely.

Tracevelo reviewed ztto cassette, and he explains (with drawing at 11:42) its weakness - alu cogs, which sould be less of a problem for Sroad.

What are the reviews on this cassette ?
Sroad first impressions from WW users are mostly positive:

@allrandomletters: sroad 11-32 (no feedback)
@jencvo: sroad 11-32 ("First impression was really good, didn't notice any difference in shifting performance, even during sprinting under heavier load" vs 105)
@ehlpitel: sroad 11-32 (no feedback)
@kroem: sroad 10-36 (no feedback)
@ultimobici: sroad 10-36 ("Shifting is fine compared" vs sram)
@saldegracia: sroad 11-42 ("shifting is super-crips" vs sram)
@fourfa: sroad 10-36 ("Shifts great")
@Global: sroad 10-36 ("Shifting is perfect and it is silent")
@AnkitS: sroad 10-36 video: https://imgur.com/Q5tcdDI ("This cassette shifts fine but the ultegra gs derailleur isn't optimized for"10-36)
@iamraymond: sroad 11-34
("Only thing I didn't like was the super tight machining of the lock ring which means you have to make sure the lock ring tool is perfectly straight to fit in properly. Any bit of an angle and the tool won’t fit into the cassette. I swapped the original SROAD lock ring with an Ultegra one and this is no longer an issue. The Ultegra lock ring is also lighter.")
("The other thing I discovered, which isn't any fault of the SROAD cassette, is with the Carbon Ti hubs I'm running. I had an issue where the shift up from the 11t cog was fine at first, then it would not always work, then finally it stopped shifting altogether. On the road, it didn’t really bother much much cause I am very rarely on the 11t anyway, but I couldn’t help but investigate further. I realized that the cogs on the cassette can be positioned in various orientations on the Carbon Ti free hub; unlike the other free hub bodies (i.e. DT Swiss) where the cogs can only fit in one way. It’s important to make sure that the small spline on the separate 11t cog matches up with the small spline on the cassette. If the two are mismatched it will lead to poor shifting. I must have not installed the 11t properly when I removed/reinstalled the cassette onto the hub. Pretty dumb mistake on my part!")
@Maddie: ("The Sroad cassette: To my surprise, I can’t fault it all. Apart from a bit slower shifting in the three biggest cogs I couldn’t recognize any difference to a DA cassette. It’s also silent. Blindfolded, I’m not sure if I was able to spot which is which. I still have a ZTTO cassette (but not the ultralight one) which is very different. Shifting remained slow, no matter how I tweaked the derailleur setting. But this one from Sroad will stay on the bike. It’s good.")

so
- lockring is not good, replace sroad lockring with shimano lockring
- sroad cassette short term is good (better than ztto), no long term reviews
- it is recommended to use cassette following exact official RD specs
- cog materials: it is not clear if it is 11 steel cogs or 1 alu + 10 steel cogs (either way durability is better than ztto)

I've looked at various, and settled on Sram / Shimano. The AliExpress / Ztto stuff is pretty poor for cassettes/ chains. (OK for brakes though)
Look 695 aerolight eTap 11
Boardman TTE eTap 11
Brompton S2 LX ti custom
Trek 5500 1994 Sram Red 10
Boardman CXR9.8 eTap 11
Open UPPER - DA 9270
Ridley x-fire Sram Red 10

and lots of non- WW others.
