I’d agree with several people above, don’t use those tires honestly I’ve had less and less luck with RH tires lately. They seem to fit perfectly then 1 psi over and they blow off. I’ve converted all my bikes over to Challenge tires (Strada Bianca for slicks and Getaways for treaded tires) and been incredibly happy with them. I ran a set of Getaways 45mm from the start fall of last year until end of summer this year. Probably over 4000 miles and the only reason they came off is because I ran over a 4” framing nail that went through both sidewalls.

A bit off topic (and the exact opposite of your RH thoughts) but what was your experience like in the mounting, seating and, eventually, the unseating/dismounting of those Challenge tires (and what rims r u using 'em on)? The Getaway HMTL 40c that I installed on an AG25 wheel was perhaps the tightest & most unforgiving tubeless tire mounting/seating effort I've had in 20yrs. of using tubeless. Fortunately my LBS took the tire back acknowledging the "challenge" in dealing them (and to do that I almost had tear it apart to get it unseated and off the rim). Too bad since it otherwise looked like a wonderful gravel tire!

100% agree that the Challenge tires are some of the hardest tires to get on a rim. I really struggled with them on my LightBicycle AR46 (I think) wheels but once they were on they work really well. I didn’t have any issues getting them off or on once they were ridden a few times. I actually think the Challenge tires are easier to get mounted the second time than any other tires I’ve used. That first time even getting them on a rim was probably the hardest one ever done.

My issues with RH tires starts and ends with their sensitivity to pressure and rim size. I’ve had several rims from big brands (zipp, Easton, Bontrager, etc) that I could never get their tires to seat on. Once on I’ve never had confidence that they are seated well. I usually run things in the grey areas and I’m fairly okay with that. The RH tires just seemed sketchier than most.

I ran a 35mm Bon Jon pass on the front and a 38mm Barlow pass on the rear rim tubeless for several months. Set some road descending PRs that summer!
I then switched to knobbies for winter. When I tried to mount them in the next summer I couldn’t get the beads to seal and had to run them with tubes. Seems they stretched. I’ve since switched to the Hutchinson Caracal Race 40 as my fat slick of choice. WAM29 is 44mm. They have great ride feel and roll fast. Too early to know on durability.

The only tyre more dificult to get on the rim has been the Schwalbe Marathon Winter studded tyre.

This wheelset + tyre combination is a totally marvelous setup to ride either on gravel or asphalt.

For those of you running road tires, or tires that are specked narrower than the rim, have you found durability of the tire, particularly the sidewall to be an issue? I'm curious about this setup, but not sure if I want to mess with a good thing with my experience of 25mm iw

I am running Specialized Mondo 35, a very similar tyre to the GP5000AS TR. they also measure 37mm but are easy to mount on the AGX45.

I haven’t suffered any punctures yet but when these wear out I will replace them with the AS TR for extra sidewall protection for peace of mind. I think if you want to run tyres narrower than the rim then sidewall puncture resistance rating should be a high consideration.

Does the tread generally flatten out so it measures wider? I definitely worry about the sidewall exposure

Yes, each extra 1mm of internal rim width stretches the casing wider, and adds 0.3mm to 0.4mm to the external tyre width. The radius of the tyre becomes larger/flatter.

The upside is more air volume for the same tyre weight. The perceived upside is compliance to the rule of 105% though some are now refuting its importance or existence.

The downside is sidewall exposure. If you suffer from sidewall punctures in your area, discard the rule of 105 and increase the tyre width to protect the sidewall more.

SGX = 32mm internal.

Nice! Only the wheelssets themselves available yet, not the completely build wheels. Will come though probably.

But not sure if going even wider than their 29mm is good. The weight drop of the rims is interesting.

32mm is OK (ref Zipp 303 SW) when running 40-55mm tires.

I'm going to be a bit conservative and wait for more people to try these ultra wide rims. Still a bit too many user reports of side wall flats on these type of rims due to the more exposed sidewalls. (Zipp 303 SW).

But happy to see others try it first, please let us know your thoughts once you've used them :D
