I don't see any benefits of 1x for gravel - there is no rear suspension and FD clearance is rarely an issue wih tires up to 2".
For bikepacking in hilly terrain you definitely want more than 1:1.

For me it would be 2x with top ratio around 0.85, so 46x30 with 11-34 or 11-36

Looking at first 50 bikes with rear deraileur:
≈1:1 low ratio is used only on 14 of the 50 bikes
the rest 36 of 50 bikes was using much lower ratio

As mentioned, depends on your needs. For the riding I do here, def 2x, with better than 1:1. I'm at 32-34 on the lowend, and could have used a 36 out back on a couple of rides (but I survived lol).

I quite like 1x on my Diverge, great for bumbling around on the gravel and commuting. Would I want it on a road bike, probably not.... too many gaps in gearing

For bike-packing, I would definitely want an easier ratio than 1:1 at the very least. Bail-out gears are always welcomed too for regular riding,

Well I’ve had it on my bike for about a week or so. It is all steel like an XG1199. Shift quality is fine

Nice. Wish I could try it, but I'm running Shimano and no XD driver. Might try the 11-34.

I’m using XTR Di2 with an SGS cage.

What’s the situation with custom cassettes? I might be interested in a couple, perhaps 10-32 & 10-34.

Here is my 2 cents..
I grew up on single speed, then moved to 2x in the 90s with a short stint of time trial type riding. Then single speed until a few years ago.

Ok so I wasnt cadence sensitive until I tried the 2x AXS on my Niner.. Man was it is so sweet and smooth with single tooth jumps, it was like riding my motor bike.

But, one negative on 2x for me is I hate looking at a front mec and 2x Chainring.. I like a cleaner look.

So I converted to an Eagle AXS Mullet with an eThirteen 9-46. Plenty of gears and range however, when shifting during a sprint on the road the cadence jumps between gears more than I like. You get use to it. But I think a Rotor 11-39: 11, 12, 13 , 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 24, 28, 33, 39 but be butter.. So I want to try that next
