Crux 2021
Moderator: Moderator Team
Hi,
I am planning to replace the headset bearings in my crux in the near future now that the wet season in north america is mostly over. I ordered the lower from my local specialized dealer. For the upper I am going to use a wolftooth to avoid having the headset issues others have come across.
Could someone please confirm if the headset from wolftooth should be the IS41/28.6 or the IS42/28.6? Seems that the IS42 option only comes in premium, whereas the IS41 comes in premium or performance.
I've read on different forums and seems like some say the IS41 works, some says the IS42 works. I dont mind the price difference, i just want to make sure I order the correct one that is compatible.
Thank you

Hey all,
Ive been looking at a 2024 Crux Expert which comes with Sram 1x Rival Groupset.
Can this simply be converted to a 2x system by adding a front derailleur and a 2x front chain ring?
If so can anyone please advice which front derailleur will accomodate a 48/31 chainring?
Cheers

No.. You'd need to buy a crankset specific for a double.la85 wrote: ↑Sun May 26, 2024 8:48 amHey all,

I converted my Crus expert to a double, but I swapped to Shimano so I knew I was shapping everything front the jump.
You'll need to buy and install a FD mount. It's the same one as the Aethos. Your local shop can order one or search on PerformanceBike or similar. For a FD, you just need to match it with whatever crankset you are going to run. I'm not super familiar with SRAM but they have normal road and "Wide" versions for the AXS stuff. I think (definitely double check this) the Crux comes with a wide crankset, so you'd need the wide FD. And just swap out the chainrings which is pretty simple for SRAM. But definitely check which crank version you have now before ordering the FD.la85 wrote: ↑Sun May 26, 2024 8:48 amHey all,

I don't think Shimano or SRAM have 1x or 2x specific cranksets. They're all interchangeable. You just swap out chainrings.CrankAddictsRich wrote: ↑Sun May 26, 2024 11:06 amNo.. You'd need to buy a crankset specific for a double.la85 wrote: ↑Sun May 26, 2024 8:48 amHey all,

I join in the question. I am in the same doubt.ceriks wrote: ↑Sun May 26, 2024 2:41 amHi,

For some reason I thought SRAM 1x cranks were direct mount like MTB cranks, but maybe I'm wrong... I took it off my bike and sold it, didn't look to closely at it.BikeTyson wrote: ↑Sun May 26, 2024 1:09 pmI don't think Shimano or SRAM have 1x or 2x specific cranksets. They're all interchangeable. Some are direct mount, some have spiders. But all of the road group cranks have interchangeable chainrings so you wouldn't need new crankarms going 1x to 2x. Same with Shimano. I used to go back and forth between GRX 2x for gravel riding and 1x for cross.CrankAddictsRich wrote: ↑Sun May 26, 2024 10:17 pmFor some reason I thought SRAM 1x cranks were direct mount like MTB cranks, but maybe I'm wrong... Been kicking around the idea for a while of adding a suspension fork to my Crux. Based on DJ wind tunnel, I wonder if the Lauf Grit https://www.laufcycles.com/product/lauf-grit-sl would "fit".
Anybody have any experience changing out to this fork? Any thoughts on how it would change the geometry?

The linked woftooth and enduro products I posted previously will assemble a perfectly fitting headset for the Crux. I have over 5000 km on them with no issue.ceriks wrote: ↑Sun May 26, 2024 2:41 amHi,

Not so sure about that, the bearing included with the IS41/28.6 is this:
- ACB 3645 SS- 1-1/8" stainless steel, Angular Contact Headset Bearing (30.2mm x 41mm x 6.5mm: 36 x 45 deg) --> OD 41mm
However, the original Crux bearing is Specialized S092500002
- Integrated, Campy style, 41.8x30.5x8mm, ACB 45X45 --> OD 41.8
The WolfTooth IS41/28.6 bearing is 0.8mm smaller OD than the original.
I'm not really sure if -0.8mm OD is significant or can generate excessive head play, I would be grateful if someone could clarify this point. But I would say the correct one is the IS42/28.6 ---> https://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/pro ... 2897717283

Another vote for the IS42/28.6-went back to confirm that I have IS42/28.6, installed last fall, no issues, so much better than the stock headset.PixelMike wrote: ↑Wed Jun 05, 2024 7:26 pmHi,FuelForThought wrote: ↑Fri May 31, 2024 2:12 amThe linked woftooth and enduro products I posted previously will assemble a perfectly fitting headset for the Crux. Follow up from this. I decided to see for myself and pick up both the IS41/28.6 (standard bearings) and IS42/28.6 (premium bearings) from wolftooth. Did some measurements and dry fittings in the frame, and the IS42/28.6 is the more exact match to the headset bearings specialized makes for the bike. The IS42/28.6 has an outer bearing diameter of 41.8 mm which is identical to the stock specialized headset bearing. The IS41/28.6 bearing does fit and I'm sure would work fine once the preload is applied, but there is a decent gap between the frame and the bearing which I would think is not ideal.
This is the correct match: https://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/pro ... 2897717283

can a 48/35 sram red quarq fit without worrying about clearance issues to the chainstay or impacting max tire clearance in the rear?
