There's no secret sauce. The GS/RX RD has a long enough cage to acommodate a big total capacity. Also want a 11/12T -42 cassette that is as light as the XX1 cassette for my road bike 1x project. 10T is too rough and loud on the road. Fine on gravel for me. Otherwise the XX1 is a peace of art. I was very disappointed with ETAP AXS options for the road.

very true.. my XTR 11-40 got installed on 650b wheelset #2 w/fenders ( required right now with all the rain).. no problem with the 40 and plenty of b-screw left. I do wonder if my clutch tension is set a little too high. When I engage the clutch occasionally the di2 wont shift... but always shifts with the clutch off. (RX-805) This never happened on the smaller 11-34 cassette. I'm eyeing to switch to XTR 2x setup now, tempted to go 1x.. then I would really need a 50 cassette at some point, because I dont want a tiny front ring.

I have had Di2 shift issues with the clutch engaged also. In my case it won’t shift out of the smallest 3-4 cogs
yes this is pretty much what is happening to me.... this was not the case with my other cassette though? No other changes.. I know my chain is on the long side with the 11-34.

I checked torque on the clutch and it measured 3.5Nm. I didn’t try to adjust it yet. I also noticed my battery drained the day it wouldn’t shift. so at this point I assume I didn’t setup something correctly and will double check the derailleur alignment and my chain length this weekend.
I might go 1x very soon... maybe get a e13 race cassette (9-46) with a 42 or 44t upfront and get an XTR M9050 RD... and call it done. I have so many overlapping gear ratios with 2x and the large cassettes I have, I basically have 14-15 speeds which is not much more then 11.

Im running the RX with a 11-46 cassette and a Wolftooth Roadlink and it shifts through, I would be surprised if its an issue with the clutch or di2, maybe a problem isolated to your derailleur? I was using the 11-40 cassette without the Wolftooth and was shifting fine as well. Well, I've ended up sourcing a XG-1199 10-42 cassette for a bargain price as well as a 46T front chainring (and change to 36T inner), so looking fwd to trying the new combo .

You really need 2x with a 10-42?
I think Recon Aluminum is the lightest, their aluminium cassete 11-36 is 150g.
Next, Recon Titanium 11-36 is 210g.

when you need top end and low honestly it can be useful. As my gravel bike is my only road bike for now, I dont want to lose the top end and I need a very low gear for some of the areas around me. 25% sustained in gravel is hike-a-bike territory. Maybe an E13 TRS 9-46 is the solution I will try it.

2 main reasons.
Still have to ride on the road to get to my dirt tracks.
Secondly, bike is setup already as a 2x, so why not keep it.
Also, the new wheels I got have XD driver, so giving it a go with the 10-42. If it turns out no good, will go to the Shimano hub driver and 11-34 cassette.
Also do some routes with steep climbs, so want to try a much lower gear
