Hey guys, I plan on buying a Basso Palta gravel bike sometime in the spring of 2019. My preference is to use 35-40mm carbon wheels but I can get the Black Inc. 50mm Carbon wheels for $900. What do you think?

Sounds good... I’m on Enve 4.5AR and the wheel depth looks good. I like your price a hell of a lot better

So the Palta is a dedicated 1x bike. Is Sram the only option?

No, Shimano now has a couple of rear derailluers with clutch mechanisms to allow a 1X set up. The Ultegra RX8000 and I heard there will be a 105 version coming out as well.

So I can use a third part 1X crank that goes to 40-42T?

I would strongly consider Light Bicycle's WR56C02 or WR46C02 for graveI use, I think the price tag will end up close to $900.

If I was to do 1x... I would do EASTON (EC90SL) crankarms...although you can get chainrings for Shimano as well. I'm a solid 2x guy so I use absoluteblack rings with DA9100 crankarms.

Yeah just realized those Black Inc wheels are only 17mm internally wide. Not gonna work!

I'd want aluminum rims for gravel. Do you need the aero benefits? I ride my gravel bike on mountain bike trails so I'd be affraid of damaging carbon rims.

Why? Carbon is more than durable enough in this day and age.

Cost/benefit. It's not more duable than aluminum at 2-5X the cost. If you don't ride gnarly trails on your gravel bike then by all means get carbon rims.

Carbon wheels are fine for daily trail use, I don't know what the poster above me is talking about.

Sounds pretty nonsensical to me. My gravel bike has Light Bicycle 650b RG722 carbon rims, and I've had zero problems with them over all sorts of terrain, running either 38mm tyres for rides that are mixed bitumen and fire road, or 48mm tyres for the rougher stuff. To get the same sort of durability from aluminium rims, you'll be going at least 100g heavier per rim.

I have the Easton EC90s on my 1X gravel bike and my 2X road bike so... I like them! Be warned though, they have a super wide Q factor so if you're not into that, maybe look for something else. As to the OP's question; yeah, you can use any crankset as long as you can find a 1X chain ring to run on it.
