I also posted this in the MTB section.

I am a mountain biker trying to break into cyclocross racing. I can’t seem to get use to the drop road bars on my Cannondale Super X Rival, and have been running flat bars on my SS Ridley X Fire cross bike for a while, and love it.

Question: I would like to run a SRAM XX1 11 speed shifter with a SRAM Rival 11 speed derailleur. Is this something that can work, or do I need to run a MTB derailleur and cassette? Thank you in advance for any advice or information.

Nope. Cable pill on 11 speed Mtb is different to road. Sram do make a road specific flat bar shifter though. S700 iirc

You'll probably need to get used to the drop bars eventually, the UCI CX regs are being adopted by quite a lot of leagues and race series in some form or other, so if you are in anything else than the fun class, you'll need drops.

(they shouldn't really take that much getting used to, unless you've had them set up by someone who has no idea what they are doing. Which isn't as unusual as you might think.)
