I want to build a bike for my son's 11th birthday. I've got some nice wheels ambrosio excellight with pmp hubs. It will be campag 10 speed. I've got a spare chain and 12/29 cassette. Looks like a praxis alba 48/32 chainset makes sense. This will get him up most hills. He is 5ft 1 inch and I've found a nice frame. I need advice on

1) Rear derailleur - can I get away with a short cage or will I need a medium or long?
2) Front derailleur - to manage the 32 tooth inner chairing will I need a triple specific front derailleur?

1) short cage is ok for capacity=46-30+29-12=33
2) with clamp on fd mount you can use double fd
with braze-on mount use WickWerks Fit Link adapter

Brilliant - thanks ooo. The fit link adapter is exactly what I need. Helps to keep the costs down as well as I don't need to worry about triple specific rd and fd. I could also fit a miche 16-30 cassette which might give him some more useful gear choices.

Why not 1x? It's not like he needs to go 60kph :D

Yes 1x is probably an option and will be easier. Yet where we live has a lot of flat as well as hills so the 32 might not quite cut it for him. I've noticed TA do lots of smaller outer rings for 110 bcd and a 44 outer would work quite well

I used (FSA) triple cranks with 2 TA rings (inner & middle) for my own CX bike and my wife's bike.

26/40 or 30/44 both work great.
