Numbskull here needs help with Di2 Road and XTR cassette.

Ignorance is bliss...right? Well, not exactly. I have an XTR wheelset that I want to use with my 11 sp Ultegra Di2 gravel bike. I didn't realize that I couldn't use a road cassette on an XTR freewheel (I know now). So I'm stuck with this brand new XTR wheelset, and a bike with new Ultegra Di2 mech's.
Is there any hope, and/or what alternatives do I have?

You could use the new 'Ultegra' HG800 11-34 cassette, as the 34t hangs to the inside like 11sp XT/XTR cassettes do.

If you want smaller than that you could use an Edco 11-28 conversion cassette or similar.

That's a decent alternative, thanks! Running 11-36 SRAM road cassette now on my other wheelset.

Shouldn't after you re-adjust the rear derailleur for the change in cassette spacing.

The HG800 is specifically designed to be used with Ultegra R8000 and R8050 long cage mechs.

I have a 6800-GS on my Crockett. 11-32 is a tight fit, you might get a 34 to work, but I can’t see a 40t fitting.

I have no problem with the SRAM 11-36, and it "appears" like the arm is long enough to accomodate a larger cassette. Just hoping someone who has done this will speak up.

Could be your bike has a slightly longer deraileur hangar, I just know that 32 is tight on mine and I think 34 would hit the top pully regardless of any b-screw adjustment. I'd also say that unless you're running rings really close to each other in size up front, you might run into an issue with how much slack a 6800 will take up. Officially the total capacity on the 6800 is 37t, with an 11-40 that's 29t right there. Doesn't leave you a lot of options in front unless you're running 1x. Not saying it can't be done... just not to be surprised if it doesn't. Wolftooth link mentioned by @ms6073 probably your best bet as it's going to effectively lenthen your hangar, but not sure if that gives you any extra capacity when it comes to the rings.

Yes, however I thought a Road Link might mess with the shifting when I use my other wheelset, which is 11-32. That's the only reason not to use a Road Link as far as I know.
