Pairing flatbar shifters (MTB) with 36-46 crank..

Especially for light weight issues concerning cyclocross / touring bikes & parts.

I'm planning to build kind of "freak" ;)

idea is : flat bar, mtb shifters, ROAD FD, 36-46 crank , rear shifter & brakes are not issue at all. Just wondering how to pair mtb shifter with road FD to have standard cx crank. Can be Shimano, can be Sram, whatever. Perfectly 11 spd. Cassette 11-28.

Did someone commit such crime ?

Shimano makes flat bar shifters that pair with their road derailleurs. I used some Tiagra level shifters for a bike build for a friend. They worked nicely with the 10s stuff I paired them with. I imagine they make an 11s compatible version now.

thnx !
edit : I checked possibilities and Shimano offers just some "fitness bike" shifters. I'm interested in something better... .

They do up to ultegra level, SL-R780. Pair that with a road FD of the same generation and you'll be sorted.

edit, they now even do a 2x11 version. SL-RS700

So you can do a complete road groupset, 2x11 against your 36/46 and 11/28 cassette

exactly those I meant : "Shimano Rapidfire flatbar 11-speed shifting lever for fitness bikes"

perhaps I don't know something and these are Ultegra (?) "level" ??

SL-RS700 are between 105 or ultegra level. Construction is similar to an SLX/XT lever, ispec compatibility.
If you're worried it's a sora or claris shifter, it's not.

The "7" is the give away, that's always (to the best of my knowledge) indicated a mid/high end non series component.

Like CX50 and CX70 cranks. One heavy and crap (and cheap) the other isn't.

Or the non-series hydro brake set ups you have a 5 something which appears to be sub 105 quality a 6, which is essentially mechanical 105 and the RS785, which are essentially DI2 ultegras without the branding.

I suspect by "fitness bike" they just mean a flat bar bike for "fitness" rather than an MTB or a road bike, if you see what i mean.
