Down to CX shoes: The best choices are ....?
Moderator: Moderator Team
Seems like common sense but fit should be your #1 criteria. Empires, Sidi's, etc are all great unless they hurt your feet.
Figure out which brand/last fits best and pick the best shoe that fits.
Personally I have a narrow heal, wide forefoot and high arch. Giro Empires are a disaster for me. I've found Lake shoes to be the best fit and have found the MX-175s to be fantastic for cross.

The XC70's are lovely for cross, you can mould the upper around your feet(nothing as good as bont, but it works) and the heel cup is fantastic. They just released the new XC7's with the same dynast tech, but I think we should see an "XC9" too based on what we've seen on rider's feet at the tour. The only complaint I have is that I need some studs for the steep run-ups i have to manage. I have pretty normal feet

The MX331 Cross is a beast, if you race. It’s useless for anything else. Lake are also making a new ‘Supercross’ version of MX237 that looks a little more forgiving.
Personally, I’m not racing seriously this fall so I think I’ll go with something like MX180 for the versatility. With studs they’ll be good enough for the occasional start too.

I have had 2 pairs of Shimano XC90, they are great for CX and MTB. I also like the S-works MTB and Sidi Drako.
Having a flexible sole is way over rated. How much do you really run a lap? 10-20 seconds? Even in really muddy, unrideable conditions, I've never had an issue with any of the mentioned shoes.

An off topic remark here,.... I noticed that for instance, Giro and Mavic have different Q-factor.
Mavic is narrower than Giro. Both offer no possibility to move cleats inward or out.
Well worth considering for those in need!

Ok, maybe not "move" alot, but there is wiggle room to tilt cleats a bit at my road shoes.
This is not possible in the mtb versions. atleast not on any of the 4 Mavics (mtb) i had at home or none of the Giros (mtb) i had.
Mavic and Giro are different when it comes to Q-factor that is atleast 100% certain.
With Mavic Q-factor is more narrow than Giro.
I guess some guys would have issues with this. Perhaps it's a question of adaption?
I had a spacer at driveside of my crankset and none at the left side.
This was a bit troublesome to me. It is same as widen or shorten Q-factor, that is kind of why i brought it up.
Is there any of you guys using Mavic CrossMax Ultimate SL?

Well, i slided in to both now.
How do you adjust Q on mtb cleats?
On Time/ Mavic, which is same pedals, i just don't see how that is possible.

I have the Northwave CX specific shoes and have found them a good choice. A bit 'weighty' but with a sock like liner that helps keep your feet dry in muddy conditions. Good sole with plenty of grip. I like them and they are mega cheap at the moment here -
