that is in a very difficult stage race with climbs reaching 15%+ for over 10 miles (mortirolo, gavia), not some "all the gear no idea" struggling up a 8% on a drua ace equiped R3 at 3mph :D

I'm a good climber, and a spinner. Compact appeals to me because I'm not a sprinter, and it is lighter. In about 1994 shimano did it with MTBs, I'm just surprised it has taken so long.


Exactly. Compact vs. standard says almost nothing about fitness and instead says tons about riding style and preferences. The idea that you can't perform at a high level without a 52/11 or 53/11 is ridiculous.

@ alienator, I think you are forgetting that by thinking the way you do you aren't promoting the elitist image that roadies have, where it is customary to look down on any other cyclists and view them and all new devolopments with the greatest contempt! That mountain biking thing.... just a fad too you know! :lol:

I only look down on Madcow, but that's because he's only about 4'9" tall and weighs something like 83 lbs. So I'm like 28% taller than him and 210% heavier than him: obviously I can't help but look down on him. :laughat:

the issue with compacts for racing is not the extremes on either the low end or the high end; (a 50x11 is plenty big enough) but rather the missing middle gears. remember, compact used to be called "alpine gearing"; and that's exactly what is best for; going up and down really long sustained, steep climbs. for flat and rolling terrain; the jumps between the big and small chainring are too larg and require the cyclist to almost constantly remain in crossover gears when rolling along at a normal pace. pros will use the stuff in the mountains; but that's it.

Yep... crossover sucks... that's why I have a 48/36... but I'll consider putting on a 34 when I go to 10 speed.

Who cares what the pros use? I'd expect them to push slightly bigger gears than me...

I use the 36/50 on one of my set-ups. Wonderfully good!

You can try looking at TA or FSA, whichever is more readily available for you.

One option I took, and which I haven't seen other do is to have a 38 or 39 inner 110 PCD and run 38/48 or 38/50 with a 12-25 or 11-23 cassette. Then when you go to the mountains it's just a 5 min job to swap out the inner chainring for a 34.

This way you get the low gears for the mountains but keep a nice tight gap at the front for normal use.
