Post your first Road Bike
Moderator: robbosmans
this was mine. got it around 2001-2002. i guess one should remember his first ride fondly, but that's not really the case here. bike was built by an "ex pro" using a wet noodle of a frame, obsolete components like a threaded headset and steel fork, and despite it costed only around the price of entry level bikes, it was a rip off. one rim would crack after few months, saddle was some 1$ worth item and the Shimano RX100 was... well. working, but having previously owned a mtb on STX this was a noticeable step down. to this date i wish i had gotten a basic Trek 1000 instead. or go for 2000somethig model because i had replaced every single part on that bike, to the point i re-built it and sold it after like two years for 1/4 of the price...
the best thing about it was it existed in the first place - i can still remember the sesation of riding a road bike for the first time. in some way of course having started with a shitty ride made me appreciate good stuff a lot more. but it also meant a lot of unnecessary frustration, especially since i was basically a kid with no clue about bikes and i had to learn from my own mistakes
here she is, probably some months after the purchase, already with a new fork and a-head Ritchey stem...

2004 Trek 1500 - Came with a mix of 105 (9s) ultegra (RD) and a triple! This was its 4th 'build' the 2nd being ultegra 10s. 4th and last build athena 11 (first gen, had 'ultra shift' shifters) - RAIN BIKE. Not sure why I rebuilt this frame so many times, 2008 my madones rear dropout was bent (one piece + bonded into the frame!) so I built the 1500 up to race Superweek. Trek replaced the dropout on the frame.

No pictures of my 1975 Bob Jackson with Campy Neuvo Record. Worked my butt off in high school to buy that bike.I wish I still had it. Same with the Bianchi that came out of their custom shop in Italy.
I also started on a mid 70's Bob Jackson. A member of the club I raced for as a junior sold me the frameset in 1979. Built up with Shimano 600, Cinelli bars and stem. Couldn't afford Campy. Bike is still in my parents house. Looked like this:Juanmoretime wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2024 7:56 pmNo pictures of my 1975 Bob Jackson with Campy Neuvo Record. GT Grade alloy gravel bike with 5700 mechanical and TRP disc brakes - was a requirement after owning on and off various kinds of hybrids. Bought for £980 in 2017 to explore the countryside, it got nicked within weeks after moving to London but behaving like I still lived in Royal Tunbridge Wells. The ‘guy with 2 bikes’ tagline in my SpareRoom ad was off by one bike by the time it came to fruition, but it landed me in a cycling household and ultimately made me who I am as a cyclist.

I got my first real roadbike with more than 3 gears in 2003. I bought a frame and built it up. A Danish Boreas Aër topmodel. With Ultegra Flightdeck and Mavic SCS wheels with zicral spokes.
I saved it a lot and since then I've had so many that this has only gone 902 km.
Here is my stable for the time being

Fuji Gran Fondo 2.5, bought on a whim but it didn't fit me. In hindsight it was a pretty mediocre platform anyway

Oh, wow. A lot of people on this forum made very good choices for their first road bike! I guess I'll post mine - which is from the other end of the spectrum.
Less than 200 GBP new (~2010). This picture was taken after I spruced it up a little, having just ridden it from Land's End to John o' Groats (980mi). So - new chain, cassette and bar tape. Zing!

2010 CAAD9 4. Best bang for the buck entry level bike at the time. This was my first road bike. Long time MTB rider, just wanted to get into better shape. The frame was made in USA, decent weight (minus the wheels), nice mix of SRAM double tap 10 speed. I had this thing for years. I eventually got it down to 14 or so lbs with a enve 1.0 fork, full red BB30 groupset, Bontrager aeolus 5 tubulars. I regretted selling it for awhile but the frame was limited to 25s, I could sneak in a 28 but it was too close for comfort.
