Talk to me about multitools – what do you carry?

My current multitool has the following, but I worry that I’m missing something vital (a chain splitter or an 8mm hex key, perhaps?).

• 2 / 2.5 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 mm hex keys
• T25 Torx
• #2 Phillips

I ride with tubes, not tubeless.

Look at what you need for the bike and go from there. No point having a tool that has lots of things you don't need, and few things you do.

An 8mm for example. How likely is it for your crank to come undone if it's already torqued correctly at home.

When I build a bike, I swap out bolts so I only need to carry a 3,5,6mm hex and nothing else ( regarding multi tool stuff ).

Allen key for the axles , pump , spare Tpu tube, a few patches and that's it.

Just bought a Daysaver Essential 8 and it’s great. Super light. I have the tire lever and chain breaker attachment also. I carry that, 1 TPU tube, CO2 + head, and a dynaplug carbon race plug tool. Just ordered a mini electronic pump so the CO2 might leave.

Daysaver is the only option for a weight weenie roadie. I have an essential 8 too and it has been used a lot. The only issue is it is some airports might argue it is too sharp to take in hand luggage.

For road I use the Daysaver Essential 8, but it has issues that I documented here, iPump Twist, cut down pedros tire lever, tpu tube, quick link, patches, all in a small bag which I repaced with a camping specific dyneema one that I bought from garagegrowngear.

The picture is old so current weight is somewhere between 100-110g.

Thanks. I hadn't seen this Daysaver issue.

The Topeak Nano 7 multitool weighs 44g. Perhaps it's a good option, although it lacks a chain splitter.

That topeak is missing a 6mm which for 80%+ of bikes is used for the through axles so I wouldn't use it unless your bike uses T25 axles.

Thanks—I'd missed that! Also, I'd rather have a chain splitter, although they're hard to find in a lightweight multi-tool.

If you really need a chain splitter.
For a multitool, this one actually works, and for the money it's extremely well made with hardened hex's, rather than the cheese like metal most brands use.

Topeak TORQBAR DX with 3,4,5,6mm bits and the standard 5nm torque module.

Does everything I need and is compact enough to stuff inside my cycling wallet. You'd be surprised how often it gets used. Someone needs some proper tightening and there it is.

I discovered the Topeak Ninja 16+ multi-tool, which has a chain splitter and weighs 92 g. I’m a massive fan of Topeak multi-tools, so the Ninja 16+ could be a winner for me.

Identical setup here. I've lost the small torx part from my daysaver though and they seem impossible to replace in the UK!
