Roval Rapide Cockpit on my Tarmac SL6
Score! A restock in the UK that immediately went out of stock eee... I managed to get myself a 400 x 120mm bar :beerchug:

The plan! To get a clean look on the SL6. I am a fan of the Raceware single adaptor which I believe is being used here...

Image

but alas I need stack...Now Raceware MAG CAD do make spacers, but as I understand it is SL6 headsett -> SL7 Steerer -> Rapide Bar . Which is to say it is a bit bulky.

Image

Sooooo plan. Build one myself? Now there are three elements to the interface with the top headset bearing, steerer and bar. I've done a couple of prototypes and perhaps I'll do an indepth post on the specific choices but suffice it to say, matching the lines of SL6 and keeping it leaner is the goal.

I am happy with the interface, mostly okay with the steerer portion but not convinced on its interface with the bar.

This is where it is currently at:

Next steps; Work on the interface with the Rapide Bar, add an O-Ring and baffle, test the part in Nylon and make it lighter 8)
Anyway, let me know if you have any thoughts! I'd love some feedback.

Jag @ 3Bits

That looks really great.

Super clean look and seamless transition from frame to stem. Really great

What is the status, have you been able to create a new version with O-ring and adjustments to the Roval bar?

I'm interested in a spacer from you, please get in touch.

Best Tim

That's just a teal bolt from the Retül Top Cap set.

I really like the look of this integrated cockpit but I don't have a specialized bike. What measurements should I look out for to see if it'd be possible to install on my Wilier 0 SL? Assuming I can can design / 3d whatever spacers I need

Did anyone on this thread have an absolute time of it getting the bars on their steerer? I was doing it on a bike stand off of the floor as I was building the bike which made it harder admittedly but Jesus, that is a tight fit. Second time I put the bars on (had to shorten the steerer tube a bit more) I opted to put the expander plug in afterwards which helped a bit.

Anyway main thing I want to ask is for anyone else that found it such a tight fit how are you getting your preload on the bearings right? I'm afraid 2nm isn't making sure the bars and spacers are compressed enough into the bearings due to how much resistance there is in just the loose bars. I've gone with 3nm currently which has removed all play but I worry it'll screw the bearings prematurely. Thoughts?

I had a hard time. The fit was incredibly snug and tight, I wasn't sure I would be able to properly preload the bearings. I noticed if the expander plug wasn't in the steerer the bars slid on normally. I also checked on my old rim brake bike with an aluminum steerer and that fit fine. So it seems my Tarmac SL7 fork steerer expands radially when the expander plug is inserted.

The first install was really tight but afterwards the bars slip on and off with a little force and there is no play in the headset so the preload seems fine. I had a few mechanics mention I could try to use a tire lever to wedge the bars more open when sliding them on, but thankfully I didn't need to resort to that.

Nice tip with the tyre lever. Will have a look at my bars again I think. Cheers

What are the available options for aftermarket top cap and bolt?

I'm interested specifcally in

- Aluminum top cap bolt that doesn't protrude like the OEM bolt
- Replacement top cap

I have found some Ti bolts, but I'd prefer to use Aluminum and I haven't found a good source for this.

Any normal cicrcular top cap will fit. I'm using a burnt Ti top cap and bolt from God&Famous on my Allez.

I have a SL8 frame waiting to be built since late July but the cockpit is out of stock in Europe (380 x 115). It was supposed to be in stock in September but now a bikeshop like Bike24 which always specified "available in 5 - 10 days" just specifies "out of stock". Is there anyone who knows when these will become available again?

Should I buy a second hand Roval Rapide cockpit? There is a 400 x 110 available, or for example an Avian Canary. EXS is also always out of stock. Cadex is 10 degrees and I am not sure on a suitable spacer.

On the other hand, I probably will not be using the bike till early 2025 I am just aching to start the build.

The handlebar in my photo above is 380x115. I forsaw having the same issue as you, a frame, but no bar, so when the bar came in stock here in the US, I purchased 2, one for my Allez build and one for my future SL8 build. Now I'm waiting on a frame. :noidea:

I'm currently designing an R-Works WW topcap and bolt.
Available very soon...

I also found the bar a tight fit on the steerer on my SL8. None of the tire levers I had was thin enough to fit in the slot properly. My solution was to thread one of the bolts in from the opposite side as usual, insert a small putty knife into the slot, and tighten the bolt just enough against the putty knife to spread the bar so I could slip it down. Worked well and some methods one could use to pry it open a bit more could potentially damage the edge of the slot. Obviously you should spread the bar no more than absolutely necessary.

These (38cm) have just come into stock in Australia in the last 2 weeks (stores not Spesh website), and some stores still have stock, so maybe there is some global supply trickling out again.
