iphone14pro + AW = no computer?
Moderator: robbosmans
On an r8170-equipped bike as the e-tube ride app improves, and with an Apple Watch already passing heart and route data to strava… and with the iphone14pro supposedly coming with a vrr display that could drop to 1-10hz… is this finally a viable combo to consider foregoing the weight and expense of a dedicated computer (assuming one is going to bring their phone along regardless)?

Somebody needs to come up with a proper aero mount. Seems like a pretty tough problem to solve. Maybe something that would make the phone sit underneath the handlebar with only the top half of the screen visible and used as a bike computer? I can't imagine the aero drag of my brick of an iPhone hanging at the front of the handlebars acting like a sail

Yeah seems to be pretty limited for sure.
The only one I've come across is https://www.amazon.co.jp/REC-MOUNT-%E3% ... R1TQX?th=1

Don't know how much it improves from the last one, but my thought was even my iPhone 7 was a bit too huge yet thin for an one-point mount to hold. It flexed and wobbled whenever I touched the screen.pesos wrote: ↑Fri Aug 19, 2022 1:33 amYeah seems to be pretty limited for sure.

I currently use this rec mount system and haven't had any issues with it.

I'm currently already running a similar set up with my 13 Pro and AW on a SP Connect Aero mount:
Using this app called Cadence, I have connectivity with my Garmin speed sensor, power meter and Garmin Varia and heart rate from my AW, and the higher tier in app subscription has in app turn by turn navigation as well (don't use it as I'm familiar with local roads). Bike computers definitely have even more features but I'm satisfied with what this can do to not want to buy one at all

Personally, I wouldn't mount a $1000 phone on my handlebars. I've had two bike computers smashed to bits in crashes over the years.
Nope the mount is secured to your stem or bar using 3M VHB tape, which is strong enough for me to not use the provided rubber bands. The tape does leave a bit of sticky residue when peeled off (takes a lot of effort to remove it) but that can be cleaned off completely with alcohol. Phone doesn't move at all even through potholes

I have the Quadlock out front mount on my gravel bike with the light mount underneath. Mostly so I can run trail maps and just explore.
Sorry, no pic of the phone mounted since I used it to take the pic….

Not for me. I like physical buttons on cycle computers. Touch screens are too difficult to use well with gloves on, in the rain, if you get sweat on it etc.
Plus phones have too much going on. It is too easy to be distracted by notifications, or switch to another app and struggle to switch back while riding.

Yes physical buttons are great which is part of the reason for my post (that I didn't elaborate much on) - there are multiple buttons on the di2 shifters that can be programmed to do various functions on di2-compatible garmins/wahoos/etc as well as the shimano etube app of course. In addition to the extra programmable buttons, I believe the left shifter buttons can also be repurposed for more functions if electing to take advantage of full synchro shift.jih wrote: ↑Fri Aug 19, 2022 12:16 pmNot for me.
