Need help with Colnago V3RS sizing
Moderator: robbosmans
Trying to decide between 50s and 52s. I'm currently riding C50 55cm. 73.5 saddle height. -10 Deda magic 12cm stem with a single 5mm spacer. I'm at 8 cm saddle to bar drop with this setup.
I can't find stack height for the C50. I measured it myself and I'm coming up with 547mm to the middle of the top portion of the head tube.
I'm trying to find out if I can do the 50s and keep the bar drop at no more than 8 cm with 2 cm of spacers.
I don't want to go with the 52s unless I have to.
50s published stack is 542mm. I am told that top cap/dust cover will add 10mm to the 542 for a total effective stack of 552mm. The top cap on my C50 (Chris King) is aproximately 17mm so effective stack on my C50 = 565. Differential = 13mm.
My thinking is that if i add my existing 5mm spacer + another 13mm (18mm total) on the 50s I should get the same 8cm bar drop.
My concern is I have come across info online about V3RS 50s setups with people with similar saddle heights who would still be way over 8cm if they were running with 2cm of spacers. I don't want to add more than 2cm of spacers.
Anyone here with a 50s who can advise their saddle height, spacers and bar drop you are running with?
Thanks.

I haven't studied the geometry charts but I used to have 52s Colnago V3RS and I am 184cm with 87 inseam and 76.5 saddle height. I think it is too big for you at 73.5 cm saddle height.
You will be at almost minimum seatpost extention and that will be uglier than 3cm of spacers (besides other things).

Thanks for the Reply Hannawald. I was hoping to keep the additional spacers at 2cm. I suppose I might be able to go to 8.5cm of drop but that would be my max.
I assume you had an sr9 stem with -6 rise? How much additional spacers did you have and what was your saddle to bar drop on the 52s with a 76.5 saddle height?

I don't remember my saddle to bar drop and 100 percent sure about the amount of spacers. But something like 35mm of spacers and my saddle bar drop quite low..(that thing for cables under the stem looks like spacers so it confuses my memory about spacers themselves)
Colnago has a metal insert inside the fork steerer instead of classic expander so it is pretty solid, no worries about spacers under the stem.
You can google pictures of the bike with spacers, not so bad, if you end up with 3cm of spacers it will still look ok and definitely better than ultra short seatpost. 52s is not for you if you have 73.5 saddle height, it is like 56 from other manufacturers...if you end up with spacers you can try Deda Alanera, looks good with spacers. I know the angle is not in your favour (I think -10), but if you have 3cm of spacers (I don't say you will, maybe you end up with 2cm) than the cable guide looks like another spacer...
Do your math, but V3RS is a great bike and couple of spacers (2-3cm) should not put you off. And definitely no 52s.

If I measure my saddle height along the center line of the seat post, it's 72.5mm, but more like 73 if I measure further back where I sit. A stack of 525mm plus the most common 15mm headset top cover gives me a 10cm saddle to bar drop, with a -17 stem. A -6 stem would give me an 8cm saddle to bar drop. I could make a 48cm or 45cm work.
DaveS,
Your point is something I have thought about too. I have my saddle set rear of the spindles relative to my knees but I always measure saddle height at the point my seat post would intersect the saddle. Another variable that's hard to include in my calculations for the 50s. I'm 179cm tall.

At your height, the 50cm with a 542mm stack should work. Worst case, a -17 stem might be needed. I'm riding the smallest frame I've ever owned with a 509mm stack. I put a 30mm headset top cover on it and use a -17 stem to get a 10cm saddle to bar drop. This leaves 15mm of extra steering tube that might make resale easier.

I'm 1m78 and have 73,5 cm saddle Height.
I've had a 52s C59 who was a little bit too long for me and didn't look so awesome due to the short seat post output
I've bought my V3RS in early 2020 and have decider to take a 50s, 120mm stem and no spacer. First he looks amazing and i've never felt myself so good on a bike (i use to ride some long ride 5 ot 6h weekinlgy)

Im 178 and have a c64 which I think is very similar. Its 52S but my saddle height is 753. If my saddle height was 735 I would probably be better on a 50S. I have 80 mm drop.Under the stem is the 15mm top cap and 10mm spacer. There is 183mm of seatpost showing measured from top of seat tube to bottom of saddle rail. Its 110 stem

If you have most of the measurements for both bikes, you can input both of them into Bikegeocalc.com and compare it that way.
You can adjust the spacers and get the bar drop right away. There's even a Fit Delta option, directly comparing your current setup and the one you're planning on getting.
